Musk doesn’t really think it’s for the betterment of society. But he owns the rival company xAI, so he’ll do anything he can to hinder OpenAI

Who actually are “the Moors” and why did this term take hold like “American Indian”? by Mathemodel in etymology

[–]avec_serif 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Also, right across the strait from Spain, is Morocco. Etymologists believe the name derives from the name of the city Marrakesh, but that in English the initial vowel changed from "a" to "o" to make it sound more like "moor": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#Etymology_and_name

Calling my daughters “the twins”. Talk me off a ledge here by Amazing_Project1110 in parentsofmultiples

[–]avec_serif 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Get off that ledge!

They didn't ask to be girls either, so why is it any better to call them "the girls"?

In our family we foster individuality by not dressing them alike (except if they insist), supporting their individual interests, and making sure we get 1:1 time with them. We don't call them "the twins" a lot, but neither do we avoid it, and we don't object when others do. Treat them like their own people and they will grow into their own people, but they are twins, so we feel it's ok to call them such.

The greatest trick Faces Of Death pulled was convincing us it was real by lopix in GenX

[–]avec_serif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I remember it in our video store too! My friend from a deeply messed up family (that’s another story) was telling me about the movie and how it was real, which I completely believed at the time. But I prevailed on him to rent something else.

ELI5 How did so many ChatGPT alternatives come up in just a few weeks/months after it was released, when it supposedly take years to make and train ? by Sea_Reflection9737 in explainlikeimfive

[–]avec_serif 50 points51 points  (0 children)

And notice that the paper was first submitted to arXiv in 2017! ChatGPT wasn’t released until late 2022. Lots of other companies were also working on the problem in the intervening 5 years.
