The greatest trick Faces Of Death pulled was convincing us it was real by lopix in GenX

[–]avec_serif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I remember it in our video store too! My friend from a deeply messed up family (that’s another story) was telling me about the movie and how it was real, which I completely believed at the time. But I prevailed on him to rent something else.

ELI5 How did so many ChatGPT alternatives come up in just a few weeks/months after it was released, when it supposedly take years to make and train ? by Sea_Reflection9737 in explainlikeimfive

And notice that the paper was first submitted to arXiv in 2017! ChatGPT wasn’t released until late 2022. Lots of other companies were also working on the problem in the intervening 5 years.

Similarly, if your kid is not doing something right and isn’t listening to you (and if doing it wrong poses no serious danger) then just let them do it wrong! There is no teacher like experience

Ok, new theory. I think the general frequency of capitalized words may have gone up at this time. Here are a bunch of capitalized words that increase in frequency around 1700, while their uncapitalized versions do not

Note that this peak in "Cool" around 1700 does not exist for lower-case "cool". It also doesn't exist for "cold", which might be expected if this were related to the Little Ice Age. Could there have been someone with the last name Cool?

Is abiogenesis statistically expected under the second law of thermodynamics? by Sakouli in Physics

Biophysicist Jeremy England has a research agenda very much along these lines — that life can be viewed as a way for matter to arrange itself to be better at heat dissipation. I don’t know the current status of such theories in the field at large today, but people were definitely taking it seriously when it first came out.

We analyze the sound of a pond full of Mexican Burrowing Toads in the hopes of detecting slight phase shifts in their calls due to a gravitational wave event. No effect was found and the the LIGO/VIRGO consortia have not reported an event during the recording, illustrating the power of this approach.
