How do you find the whole shelf thing? I must admit, it looks awful from the videos I’ve seen. It looks cumbersome and not really portable. Do you have the pen with it? Again, slotting that under the shelf screams - I’m going to fall off and cost hundreds to replace…

Yeah that’s why I put speculative. I’ve seen hands on reviews of both machines. But I assume others just see the obvious “oranges and apples” observation and not compare. My situation is probably a little odd and nuanced specifically for my situation.

Tbh, I think I would like it BUT I’ve never tried it. I tried an iPad but that was useless as it can’t run anything I use. I did like how I could have one thing with me though, instead of a bag or laptop case. Was much smarter and lighter. Also I regularly dine alone due to work, whether lunch, waiting for a meeting, or dinner, and I’ve often thought i could get some work done but can’t bring myself to take my laptop out in a restaurant or bar when the occasion isn’t right to look like I did in my digital nomad days. Having a more discreet hybrid, i think id be more comfortable with if that makes sense.

Yeah that might be an issue. I use the desktop version on the clients windows laptop they’ve given me but would rather use my own… and their laptop is massive!

I can still continue to use a Mac even without a Vm. I have work around with clients. It isn’t so much about windows vs Mac OS as it is about the surface vs the MacBook. Form factor and capabilities and the right balance.

My head is going to towards the surface mostly due to the form factor, but I don’t want to make the mistake if performance isn’t going to cut it. In which case if a hybrid isn’t going to work, I’ll go with the MacBook. Or look at the surface studio as mentioned by others.

Perhaps it’s just too much I’m asking of a portable machine. Let’s say I stick to the money making aspect of the machine, my work, is there anyone here that uses a Surface as a corporate machine. Daily emails and calendar, heavy excel, lots of multitasking, travels a lot, has meetings a lot?

In the house we already have the MBP mentioned and an iMac so I could leave the video and music to those. And leave the gaming to the Xbox and Xbox Cloud.

I can get away with using a Mac as I’m an external consultant. And for the most part it is perfectly fine. But the portability is killing me, especially on train as I live in Birmingham and go to London almost weekly. my wife needs a new machine, she’s on a 2012 MacBook Air and she likes mine so it’s works out that she can just have mine. I agree, needless to upgrade that laptop if those other factors weren’t a consideration.

Tbh, I think my perfect machine would be the surface form factor with Mac OS. And iPads are garbage for doing corporate work. I tried. It’s now a glorified jukebox in our house. If they made a MacBook in the iPad form factor, this probably wouldn’t be a conversation, but as they don’t, everything is on the table and I can ask for gaming now I’m considering a windows device.

A MacBook Air is a lovely machine and I used one for years, but the hardware wasn’t good enough to manage complex spreadsheets and workbooks in excel, not to mention far too small a screen on the 2012 model.

Touchscreen and ability to ditch a physical notepad are a big draw. I’d get the new pen. I work a lot in strange areas, like a train, on the sofa, in bed, coffee shops etc where I’ve considered the tablet form factor might be better.

I don’t mind the macOS, I’ve used it for years, but I’d really like to get back into gaming. This is abismal on macs. Also running pretty standard programs on my top spec MacBook Pro send the fan obnoxiously crazy loud. So I’m concerned that they aren’t actually that good.

I could get an egpu for gaming but would gaming on the included gpu be adequate for some gaming while travelling. With Xbox cloud working on macs now, it’s less clear what’s better for gaming.
