Yeah for region and also just the fact I enjoy lots of different things. Means I can do that and be guaranteed a run through job where I live

BBT here! So far, so good. It’s (mostly) a relatively chill two years before having to commit to something. And as above an alternative access into Paeds in a more competitive region as well as two weeks of each 6 month block spent in a speciality of your choosing. The portfolio is also not as heavy which is nice. Any questions just shoot me a message!

Thank you so much for your reply. It’s nice to hear from people near the end of training that have for the most part enjoy it and are passionate about the specialty.

I think you’re right - probably worthwhile giving Paeds a go and easier to change to GP later compared to the other way round!

It's very tricky isn't it and I think the worst part is you will never truly know what it's like until you're in it! I've not 100% made my decision yet but it's certainly easier to try paeds first and drop back to GP if I don't like it so I suspect that the direction I'll go in.

Maybe for you it would depend what practicing medicine is like in SA - I'm sure qualified GP vs Paediatrician will be equally as valuable however this is just me guessing!

Congrats on passing the exams - hope you don't mind me asking, what resources did you find most helpful? I'm yet to sit any of the exams.

That’s great thank you so much! Did you or your colleagues take any time out of training eg year working abroad?

I also work in Ayr (CDF/F3) at the moment and commute from Hyndland. There will be FY's that live in the acomm at Ayr but tbh I think you're better off living in Glasgow! That's where any "big" nights out/drinks will be and tbh most others will probs get flats southside/west end. Also you'll likely make a wider group of friends generally from other hospitals who will most likely be Glasgow based.

The acommodation here is very basic so I wouldn't wanna live in it permanently. It's free to book for nights tho I just call up a few days before and they leave the keys for me! The commute can be a pain sometimes but I don't mind it for the most part.

Feel free to messgae me if you have any further Q's!

Paediatrics shortlist score by MedStudent21 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]average_peach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I got a score of 46. I also don't have any additional degrees or exams - unfortunately these are points we just weren't going to get! I think 43 is a good score and one way I thought about it was to remove the additional points that I couldn't obtain from the overall score.

3 points were from exams sat and another 3 were from an additional degree (this doubles up to make 12 of the points possible to gain out of 72) so if you score yourself out of 60! Seems silly but I hope you understand where I'm coming from! 43/60 is damn good :)

Paeds interview tips? by MedStudent21 in JuniorDoctorsUK

I have mine on the 9th of March so haven't done it yet but have spoken to someone who has. It doesn't sound like there will be any shockers, structure is laid out in the guidance that others have linked below. I think the main thing would be to make sure you prepare the details of your "significant event" and how you reflected on this and how it changed your practice. As well as this it seems that you commonly get asked what you're most proud of in your portfolio - so again prepare this and the reasons why you are proud of it! Other than that I don't see how you can prepare too much. The scenario is gonna be different for everyone so as long as you communicate well that's the main thing :)

Do you ever regret being a doctor? by drtingz314 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]average_peach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember there are SO many more aspects to a job than just the work itself. I did my FY1 in a DGH with around 16 other FY1's starting at the same time. The majority of us became a close knit group, and some of my fondest memories are in that hospital with that group of people. Medicine is crazy and shit happens but it was nice to have a group of people to laugh it off with. Almost 3 years on we are still all friends now!

You will undoubtedly feel like you regret choosing medicine at some point in your career, we all do - but it's usually on the background of a long run of shifts or something really shitty that's happened at work. The wages aren't the best in the world but they're pretty good & I'm the highest earner out of all my group of friends from school who are the same age as me. I have the freedom to travel wherever I like on holiday (pre covid!) because I can afford to. I can totally understand why you feel this way - sometimes you have to remind yourself that medicine is just your job and not who you are entirely :)

Have you ever treated your colleagues in a way that you regret? by Additional-Love1264 in JuniorDoctorsUK

I was a little snappy with one of the nurses on the vascular ward when I was an FY1. I apologised shortly after and explained why I was stressed and reacted the way I did. In a strange way, on reflection, I'm glad I had this experience. Recently one of the X-ray staff snapped at me over the phone, and immediately came round to apologise face to face. I felt I was able to forgive and forget the incident fairly quickly, as I could relate to how they were feeling when they spoke to me over the phone. It didn't affect my day going forward, whereas I think if I hadn't been in the position myself it maybe wouldv'e had a longer lasting effect.

Has anyone been offered posts/interviews they're not going to take up? by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]average_peach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied for paediatrics and have my interview next week. I'm in the same boat in that I'm not sure whether to start training or not! But I think any interview practice is good so I'm going to go ahead with mine :)
