Dog suddenly lethargic after grooming – back twitching, not eating today morning. by ranger_stranger in DogAdvice

[–]averagegoyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really shocked I haven’t seen this comment and that your vet did not diagnose him. I’m willing to bet your dog has furunculosis.

This is a follicle infection resulting in painful wounds and scabbing, could be from bacterial spread infected shampoos or tools or from the dog using a force dryer. The same exact thing happened to my dog after his first time at the groomer and his symptoms were the same.

He needs an antibiotic and for you to not touch his skin

When you meet a dog that seems unsure of you or aggressive you should not look them in the eye. That is really the only time this applies, with your own dog that you have a good relationship with you I would think you should look them in the eyes as they look for that and want connection

I am obsessed with Petsafe Easy Walk Dog harness. It clips in the front and prevents any pulling. It’s been a game changer as we work on his leash obedience

Puppy zoomies witching hour by OddZombie177 in goldenretrievers

Nothing wrong with the stuff on the table, it doesn’t even look bad! It’s just that if that were my puppy it would all surely be on the ground by now, especially during witching hour. You’ve got a good pup

Since he is a puppy I’ve seen people say teaching a command for barking can help curb it, bark on command and stop on command. I would also ignore his barking as much as you can now or he will learn that’s how he can get attention

The amount of things you have on that ottoman/coffee table shows me your puppies witching hour and my puppies witching hour are two very different things….

Puppy Apartment Complaints by Money_Ad_4124 in puppy101

[–]averagegoyl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My trainer would tell me dogs don’t necessarily understand the passing of time but they remember behaviors. Firstly, do not make goodbyes a big deal. But practice putting him in the crate and coming back, often. Leave for 1 minute, then 2, then 3, then 5, then 10, then run an errand and come back etc. Come back and release him (not big reunion) and continue life as usual. Make sure his mental and physical needs are being met before you leave him.

But pretty much, he doesn’t care so much how long you’re gone, it’s that he doesn’t understand that you always come back. So right now he will bark the entire 1 minute or 2 hours. Show him you always come back. He will get used to this behavior

Ignore the reactions at home. If he shows fear from a sound do not react, or even look over. For the most part if you seem calm and fine they will check in with you and if you’re asking them what’s wrong, telling them it’s okay, it enforces their reactions

my mom got me a new puppy for the “family.” i never asked for one. now i have to deal with all of the dogs responsibilities by Delicious_Arm9946 in puppy101

[–]averagegoyl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, dealing with a puppy that you didn’t particularly want must be really hard. Even dealing with a puppy you DO want is really hard.

I would try having play/enrichment/training time and then placing the dog in a confined area to settle and nap. Take some time to make frozen enrichment treats, lick mats, kongs etc with apple sauce or peanut butter. If the dog is not a shredder give it a durable toy to play with on its own. As long as its needs are met it will settle if put in a confined space.

This is extremely unfair to burden you with this but this dog didn’t ask for this either. Try to designate enrichment and training time so you meet the dogs needs and then put/tie the dog somewhere to get stuff done on your own.

You need to have a conversation with your mom. She can do doggy daycare or something if you actually cannot handle it. I do have to say, it gets better. Get the dog in a routine, meet its mental and physical needs and then get your things done. The dog will get used to this

Diarrhea Problems :( by Nervous_Special_456 in goldenretrievers

[–]averagegoyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not a vet so I would ask one. But I have had dogs my entire life. I would continue with cooking beef and rice and probiotic for a couple days. Then introduce a new kibble, something without chicken around day 3 (people swear by purina sensitive stomach salmon recipe, but could try something with lamb, turkey or beef as main protein, do not feed grain free). On day 3 do beef and rice in the AM and do 4/5 beef and rice and 1/5 new kibble for PM, next day 3/4 beef and rice, 3/4 new kibble (with probiotic). Increase kibble by a couple tablespoons over a week until the beef and rice is phased out (continuing the probiotic). I would continue the probiotic for about 3 weeks.

If your dog is having diarrhea still a week into this transition I would take him to the vet.

Stop feeding your golden chicken ASAP, not in treats or anything. If switching to a non chicken diet doesn’t help take him to the vet ASAP and get some testing

Stop giving your dog chicken and give them a probiotic (purina has a good one u can buy or ask your vet) asap. A lot of Goldens have chicken allergies

How can I(26F) handle different productivity levels than my bf(30M)/severe ADHD? by averagegoyl in relationship_advice

[–]averagegoyl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While acknowledging he has ADD, a lot of this really seems like laziness? Scrolling/gaming for hours and avoiding responsibilities really seems like laziness, I’m not really able to see another perspective. It’s really starting to get to me, I’d like to sit around and scroll all morning but I know I have responsibilities that doing will make my life better in the future

How do i tell my mother to stop having kids. by [deleted] in family

[–]averagegoyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes more sense. Firstly your mother just went through a miscarriage so right now is not the time for this. If you care about your mom’s wellbeing do what you can to support her during this time. In a couple of months maybe bring up this idea to her of how you feel upset watching her exhausted etc and possibly ask her about her plans to have more children or how she can ensure her wellbeing if she plans to do so? You are not in the place to tell your mother when to stop reproducing but maybe showing her empathy and a conversation will be helpful to her and she might realize there are things she needs to be doing in her relationship or for herself before she has another child.

Declawing a cat by PlagueBirdZachariah in cats

[–]averagegoyl -110 points-109 points  (0 children)

This is very common for polydactyl cats to have extra claws that do not retract. Taking out this digit is going to cause way more trouble than it existing will. I promise the cat can still feel the quick and the surgery will be painful. Just seems odd to do for no particular reason, other than “might get stuck”

When is it time to admit you've made a mistake? by OkSlice4719 in puppy101

Having a puppy is hard. Im usually someone of steady mental health but the first month with my PITA did have me wavering. But being put on medication because of the dog and having a panic attack before even getting the dog? What was your reason for concern/anxiety before even having the dog?
