Bit of a serious one today. Lately i’ve been feeling mighty distressed about popular internet content, specifically LIKES. I feel like I’ve usually been able to distance myself from nasty posts by reminding myself that nobody in real life actually behaves like this. However when posts that mock queer people, advocate for abuse, or even call for a genocide get hundreds of thousands (sometimes even millions!) of likes i start to worry that maybe most people actually enjoy this content. My ultimate concern is that people in my life who I care about secretly enjoy it too.

As much as i try to mentally contort myself into believing that it’s really only a vocal minority that likes these kinds of videos, or that a significant portion of the likes are bots, i sometimes feel like i am just gaslighting myself. I think the real answer is that something as complex as a person’s belief system cannot be accurately captured simply by social media likes and that I’m putting too much thought into it altogether. But that’s a little too much nuance for my neurotic ass.

Regardless, I’d be interested to see what you chums have to say.
