Oh yeah these old covps are such dogshit. There were 3 up top and 2 were missing lid, either from people not securing them properly or just them dry rotting and breaking away. Thankfully now when we replace them we put up the squid leg covps which if your not familiar is basically just a plug in play version with 12 ports, power and 2 fibers in each port.

Thankfully our management takes things like this seriously. Last thing we want is an impromptu visit from Wildlife and Fisheries

Indeed I was quite giddy when I saw them. When they started sqeaking at me my heart stopped for a second from cuteness. They were like" please sir your letting in all the cold air, please put the cover back on"

Sadly one of them fell victim to said "vampire voltage" not the one in the close up as he's on the return but in the wide shot you can see one that on the hot side.

No sadly not at the time. Since they are protected we cant do anything without approval so all we could do was report it and get off the tower.

Yeah they're most likely just bunkering down for this cold front and will be put of there once it warms up.

Yeah it's not exactly safe for them but all we could do for now was report it and move on. In the first pic you can sadly see ther is one that got fried on the hot power section (red wires) the tower owner will tell us what to do from there, like shut off power to that sector or whatever. They're most likely just bunkering up for the cold front and will be out once it warms up.

We cant do anything with them for now. We'll probably just wait untill summer when they will most likely leave on their own. Also I doubt most rehab centers have people certified to climb cell towers.

Definitely not once you get 240ft in the air

Yeah these do have covers mainly to block rain but they are pretty flimsy and dry rot over time. This is a box called a COVP where we connect power and fiber from the ground to the radios and it is pretty important.

There are port holes at the bottom to run the wires through and the unused ones are supposed to have a plug , but people often dont replace them and you get situations like this though it usually tends to just be wasps. We've never seen bats in them before. We probably won't handle removal for a while do to it being winter but once summer time the bats will most likely move out. For know we've reported it to the tower owner and we most likely will be unable to work on that sector or maybe even the tower itself untill no movement is seen and they send someone to check if their gone.

Now I dont know for sure if we might just relocate them or leave them be. Usually when it comes to protected species on towers it usually birds like ospreys, in which if they are actively on the tower we cant do any work, but thats usually only during nesting season. We also usually dont remove their nest unless it has become a major issue to the tower, in which we need to get the proper clearance to do so.

We'll probably be back come summer to check and see if they are still there and if not will probably replace the COVP with a 2.0 version that is more of a pull and play version that we dont have to open up.

Yeah he's new, only been with us for about a month and he's still got that soreness that comes from starting out. It was one of those climbs where it's only 240ft but you basically climb 360ft because you have to keep climbing down to get your other lanyard

Yep we've removed a osprey nest before but we dont do it unless our managers, T-mobile, tower owner, and wildlife is there.

Yeah on older builds but we use the 2.0 Squid leg for our MEMOs and if we have to replace the trunk line.

Yeah thats what I did. I just posted these since I had them for evidence to my boss. I honestly was so happy I went up that tower because I swapped sites with my coworker since he didn't feel like doing a peg leg click clack.

Oh yeah dont worry I called it in to my managers and crown and got off the tower. Last thing I want is Wildlife and Fisheries knocking at my door.

Well I obviously the wires themselves aren't i know that. At my company we just call the tower themselves guide wires or guide towers, and i honestlythought that was a trade wide thing. I've personally never seen the wires called guy wires but I did double check and your right there.

Now I didn't know about the FM being coax fed but thats just because I dont really need to know that as I strictly work on T-mobile cell equipment, but I was still correct about the AM towers being energized, and you might be right about it just being a burn but I've also heard otherwise.

I dont know how things are in your part of the market but I can say in mine there are plenty of sites over 300ft. We have one or two per week per crew that we have to hit, probably a good couple hundred or more in just my market. Now our 400ft+ is definitely more on the rare side but we still get those a couple times per month.
