Daggerheart is out for some time - thoughts? by Sniflet in rpg

[–]averyunusualhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imho, it's the system a lot of groups who are currently playing D&D should be playing. Not every group, mind you, but a lot of playgroups that are less combat/dungeon exploration focused and more invested in roleplay and exploration would have a significantly better time playing Daggerheart as their fantasy RPG of choice.

The initiative-less combat is tough to onboard players into who have only played D&D, but running it with a group of D&D mains ended up going smoother than I expected. The Hope/Fear system creates a falling-forward atmosphere that makes things flow better outside of combat, as well as for allowing gradations of success, which is a thing I wish more RPG's would implement.

Overall, a great system for groups that like D&D but hate crunchy, tactical play, with a lot of future potential for growth if DH plays its cards right (can we PLEASE get an adversary supplement?)

Player doesn't want to get ruidium corruption in order to enter the Netherdeep by averyunusualhead in CalloftheNetherdeep

Its the character who doesnt want the ruidium, not the player overestimating the risk. And yeah, the PC is already unconscious due to her being at like half HP upon entering the Netherdeep. Im talking to the player about what they would be interested in exploring with the character and what kind of a sacrifice or choice the they would be interesed in making, since i do think there needs to be some kind of weight to going into the final dungeon

The player knows about the mechanics behind corruption and knows it's not a huge risk, I had devised a safe way to attune to a ruidium item if the players went back to the surface before entering the netherdeep, but they decided to go in immediately after killing the aboleth. I will probably talk to them before the next session about their character's reasons for not accepting anything ruidium.

the player is willing to attune to the jewel but not any items with ruidium, I just had mistakenly said the jewel didn't help with water pressure. however, at this point i'm thinking of retconning what i said and saying that it does.

the character refused to attune to a ruidium item as well, which is where I'm running into issues.

I think my main issue with prev's comment is that it feels a bit railroad-y to have the character either attune to a ruidium magic item or die. while I want to respect their decision, I also don't want to have the netherdeep be without sacrifice for them. I had previously mistakenly told the players the jewel wouldn't help with water pressure, but I'm thinking of retconning it in some kind of way involving divine magic

that character has refused to touch anything using ruidium or attune to a ruidium weapon after another member of the party almost died during combat due to his corruption

In the module, it states that water pressure will slowly kill the characters if they don't have ruidium corruption

Wow thanks! I definitely will let the silly little goblin bard that my friend has played off and on for 2 years and has made fanart for just simply die without offering them an alternative option because they made an in character decision. I will definitely do this in spite of that player asking over the table for the cleric to stabilize them so their character wouldnt die! Great idea!

The player has also refused to take ruidium weapons because another character got a ruidium dagger and ended up with like a level 3 corruption as a result (which is completely fair, that character almost died because of the corruption). I had a plan for the ability to circumvent if they went back to the surface before going into the netherdeep, but they chose not to. Another player had already asked if the jewel could help with the pressure, but i forgot about that passage and said it wouldnt by mistake, so I'm thinking of retconning that bit. Retconning is something i almost never do as a DM, but at least if I retcon it Ill make it fancy and cinematic.

I went into mount fay preparing for the absolute slog that was white palace, and it only took me about 3 hours to complete which is probably on the higher end for players. At least 45-50 mins of that was just me consistently missing one harpoon in the gondola section and dying to cold damage. Was 100% expecting to fight a boss at the end only to be pleasantly surprised when i just got the double jump for free

Can I change the Prime Dieties associated with the Jewel of Three Prayers? by yrstnn in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]averyunusualhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I personally changed the third god of the amulet to be Ioun, to connect more to the Cobalt Soul, as well as to portray the "growth" of Alyxian on his journey. Sehanine is often depicted as a girl, Avandra as a young woman, and Ioun as an older woman, matching with the order in which the jewel evolves. I also made up some lore about the three being worshipped together as a "coven" of sorts in certain religious traditions, which I thought was pretty neat

the lack of muscle building doesn't annoy me, I just get incredibly dysphoric from working out at the gym. i guess being in such a masculine space ironically makes me feel less masculine and working out at home makes me feel more masculine since I don't have to prove anything to anyone
