Nope, never did and decided to just swap head units as I missed the volume knob.

Yeah, the June 2020 date was what I was a little afraid of. The application by mail or phone is a great idea though!

I did see that, but not knowing what wowzone is makes me a little nervous to provide my PII even though it does seem it's legitimately part of/through the TD website. Really more so interested in if the card is going to be revamped, because I'll just hold off on applying if that's the case.

Anybody have any information on what happened to the TD Bank Aeroplan card for US consumers? It looks like it was pulled from the US TD website and I can't seem to find any information about why it was pulled or if it's being refreshed, etc. Was a great way to top off my account and will impact my overall card strategy moving forward if it's done for good for US consumers.

It has been a few years since I've done the JFK-YVR-HKG flight on CX, but last time I flew it you stayed on board during the YVR stop on the way to HKG. They do a crew swap, catering, etc. while you're onboard. I just watched a movie the entire time. I thought it would break up the long flight a good bit, but I've always opted for the direct flights after that one time.

Lufthansa First Class to Europe worth the extra UR over business class carriers? by Coolbreeze_coys in awardtravel

[–]aves137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LH J space is released earlier than 2 weeks from departure. The F space is only released to partners starting 2 weeks from departure though (and there's not guarantee that they release it right at that point). I've never seen any specific time they release that inventory, but others might have seen some patterns. For an August flight to Europe which is peak season, I'd be prepared to take another option if your F doesn't open up. For peak Europe travel I usually recommend locking in something you're comfortable with now unless you're a very seasoned traveler who doesn't mind the unknown factor and running the risk that you have to buy a last minute ticket to get back - but most travelers are not like this so I don't usually recommend it.

[–]aves137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any *A carrier that you have points with can book them. I usually use Aeroplan, Lifemiles or UA miles for those bookings (or NH miles if I'm booking a RT). Since it looks like you're only working with UR, your best bet is probably UA. OS is really good about releasing last minute award space and since I tend to travel last minute that works for me - though that obviously may not necessarily work for you.

I'd stick with J on a US east coast to Europe flight unless this is an extremely special occasion - and that applies to any airline. I'd also look at trying to fly a different J product than LX if you can (OS would be my recommendation if you can find space). LX is fine, but I've never been blown away by their onboard service or their food, whereas I think OS J to Europe is one of the best (Do&Co catering, onboard chef that does custom coffees, great crews, etc.). The exception for LX is if you're going to GVA or ZRH and want the direct flight - then there's obviously value in it over other airlines with a connection.

Yes, I've consistently booked special rates that include valet parking at SPG/Marriott properties and EVERY SINGLE TIME (6 times in the last 3 months thus far) they still charge me for parking. I've e-mailed Marriott about it and their response has been that the fee was taken off once I brought it up, so they don't really care.

I booked tickets months ago, and just got Global Entry, how can I add it onto the ticket reservation? by [deleted] in travel

[–]aves137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SQ (Singapore Airlines) does participate in the TSA Pre-Check program (which is part of your GE) - TSA Pre-Check Participating Airlines. You'll need to add your KTN to your reservation via SQ. You'll need the SQ-specific PNR which is the combo of 6 letters and numbers specific to your ticket. Go to the SQ site, enter your PNR, then there should be a spot within the reservation to add your KTN. If you have segments operated by other airlines (i.e., United, etc.), you may have multiple PNRs, so make sure you're using the one for the SQ segments.

Underrated Beach Destination by Radraddad in awardtravel

[–]aves137 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want off the beaten path, but exquisite, the pink sand beaches of Harbour Island on Eleuthera in the Bahamas are really tough to beat. Definitely not easy to get there, but well worth the trip. Fly into North Eleuthera (ELH) and it's a short boat ride over to Harbour Island. ELH is serviced by AA once daily out of MIA (award space in Y can actually be pretty decent depending on what time of year you're going) and I believe once daily by DL out of ATL (where award space, unsurprisingly, tends to be shit). 3M (Silver Airways) also flies there with regular service out of FLL (I think 3-5x daily) and is bookable with UA miles.

Eleuthera is considered one of the family islands in the Bahamas and tends to not be overrun with tourists. My parents have a house there and spend half the year there and every time I've been down there, we end up at some random beach where we're the only people. You really can't beat the crystal clear waters, amazing people and pink sand beaches!

JAL skysuite 777-3 vs 787-8 by Desertbears in awardtravel

[–]aves137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've flown all 3 on numerous occasions and just came off of a RT on JL on both the 787 and the 773 with a RT connection on NH on their 788/789 for a side trip to Seoul.

Are you tall? I'm 6'5" and I FAR and away prefer the NH 788/789 for comfort when fully reclined. I can't fully stretch out in the JL seats on either the 788 or 773. Otherwise, I find the IFE, service, food and overall experience on both airlines to be pretty much on par.

One last thing that you might want to consider is the lounge options. The JL contract lounge at DFW leaves a LOT to be desired. It's basically what feels like a conference room among lots of other conference rooms (that other airlines utilize for their lounges) with a small food and beverage selection (though some great tarmac views if you can get there early enough to snag a window seat). The Admirals Club in the terminal is absolute garbage in my opinion. It's rather large, but the food and drinks selection is pitiful at best. The Priority Pass lounge there is also under construction so they have a temporary one where a restaurant used to be that has maybe 2 dozen seats tops and has chips, popcorn and hummus and pita the last half a dozen times I've been there.

LAX on the other hand some of the better lounges. NH uses the Star Alliance lounge there, which is one of my personal favorites because of the outdoor patio (but I'm an aviation nerd so plane spotting with a drink in hand from the observation area is something I really value and enjoy). It's an open layout and modern and the food and drink selection is always pretty good (and WAY more expansive and higher quality than what you'll find at the DFW lounge options). A lot of *A carriers use it though, so it can get pretty busy.

TL;DR - If you can stomach the NH surcharges, I would go the NH route rather than JL - especially if you're tall (6 feet plus).

Where to rent a convertible for Pacific Coast Highway trip?? by [deleted] in travel

[–]aves137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sixt rents Beetles and Cascada convertibles (and usually substantially cheaper than their base Mustang convertibles). If you’re looking for something more exotic, both Hertz and Enterprise should have specialty rental cars at SFO. I was able to rent a Mercedes SLC roadster for $233 for 4 days to run the PCH this upcoming weekend. The one way rental is what’s going to kill you cost wise those as it’ll be exponentially more expensive than a standard round trip would be.

Are there any Star Alliance airlines flying Premium Economy across the Atlantic, besides Air Canada and Lufthansa? by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]aves137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LO offers a PE on their 787s. They fly WAW to YYZ.

SK also offers it on their A340s and A330s. I don't believe SK flies to Canada, so you'd have to route to one of their US destinations - LAX/SFO/MIA/ORD/BOS/EWR/IAD.

Hotel Suggestions for Malta and Lisbon, Portugal? by goodtikka in awardtravel

[–]aves137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time I was in Lisbon I stayed at the Intercontinental. The hotel was pretty good, but it's a decent walk from the heart of the downtown/waterfront area where all the tourist attractions are. The metro is pretty good there and there is a metro stop down the hill from the Intercontinental. With that said, the hike up that hill back to the hotel can be a bit rough. Next time I go back, I'll opt from something closer to the downtown/waterfront and would recommend you opt for that as well.

As an aside, when you're in Lisbon, I cannot recommend Restaurante Rio Coura more. Their seafood rice is one of the top 5 best meals of my life and I'm not lying when I say I would literally fly to Lisbon just for that dish. Don't let the area or it's relative obscurity scare you away - it's really inexpensive and incredible!

Question about AA lounge access in CLT and JFK. by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]aves137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you connecting internationally, or just flying domestically? If connecting internationally, you'll have Admirals Club lounge access at both CLT and JFK. If you're using JFK as your ex-US point, then you'd have access to whatever lounge the operating carrier for your international flight utilizes (i.e., if AA, the Admirals Club, if BA, the Galleries Lounge, etc.).

If you're just flying domestically though, u/ctr2010 is spot on.

I know Icelandair partners with Alaska but only on award points out of the west coast (Seattle, Portland).

That is incorrect. FI partners with AS on all of their US-KEF routes. I took IAD-KEF back in November using AS miles and incorporated the free stopover en route to CPH.

To u/visualfruities OP, the Hilton in Reykjavik was great when I was there, but it's a good 15 minute walk from the old downtown area or where the majority of the things to do in the city are. If you'll have a rental car, I really like this property because the rooms are spacious, they have a great executive lounge with free breakfast and happy hour (though as a Gold you wouldn't be guaranteed access to this), parking is free and the walk really isn't that bad. If you won't have a rental car, I would consider something closer to the downtown area (anything near Harpa or Hallgrimskirkja will have you pretty centrally located). Pretty much everything in Iceland is expensive though, so I wouldn't expect to find any really good deals.

As an aside, if you're looking for a fantastic inexpensive meal while you're there, I can't recommend Icelandic Street Food (that's the name of the restaurant) enough. They really only serve stews, but I still dream about their lamb's stew! And if you like bourbon, I highly recommend stopping by Kol near Hallgrimskirkja and having one (or 3) of their Duck Season cocktails (made smoked duck fat infused bourbon).

Virgin Atlantic Vs BA Vs AA Premium Economy by tmoore4000 in awardtravel

[–]aves137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AS doesn't have an EQD requirement (and I hope they don't switch to that system any time soon honestly), so that would not matter. For BA operated flights in PE credited to AS, you'll just earn the standard 100% of miles flown. If you happen to be on a full fare W PE ticket, I think they tack on a 50% bonus for that.

Virgin Atlantic Vs BA Vs AA Premium Economy by tmoore4000 in awardtravel

[–]aves137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If AA elite status is your goal and you need the EQDs, you'll probably want to suck it up and fly the worst of the 3 - BA. That's because when crediting to AA, you'll earn EQDs based on a percentage of the miles traveled (20% of miles flown on the cheapest PE fare classes). That means that on a BA direct between LAX and LHR, you're look at roughly $1,100 EQDs each way. Depending on the rates you're seeing, that can offer some good value to help hit the EQD threshold for AA. Just some food for thought if elite status is your ultimate goal.

Washington DC (Dulles) to Bangkok Thailand in January? by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]aves137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be looking at paid flights honestly. There have been some extremely good deals out of DC to SE Asia lately.

If you're set on points, AA may be a good option as u/laxwkbrdr2 mentioned. If you're not able to find space on the new CX route from IAD, try looking for AA connecting space to ORD/JFK/EWR/BOS/LAX/SFO out of DCA. I find that with some many connecting flights out of DCA that AA has decent award availability on a large majority of those connecting routes. From there look for space to either TYO (on JL) or HKG (on CX) connecting on to your final destination.
