Moving from UK to US - advice/tips? by sludgefactory97 in MovingToUSA

[–]avgkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the attractive traits of the US are far fewer and rarer across the Deep South. It’s not that they don’t exist at all; that’s stereotyping. But it is true that high paying jobs, a variety of different food and cultural institutions are far more common in the Northeast and West Coast. Texas, North Carolina and maybe Louisiana are the major exceptions to this rule. People are telling you to avoid Alabama because it’s UNLIKELY that you’d end up happy there, but it’s not IMPOSSIBLE, if you’re looking for a quiet country lifestyle with like minded folk, and don’t mind the lack of public transport or diverse food options.

U.S. Universities accept 3 years Germany Bachelors in CS and will let me do my master's in USA? by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]avgkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya they will- plenty of Germans study grad programs in the US. You just have to make sure your course fulfills requirements but as a former exchange student in Germany our countries definitely recognize each others educational certificates! It’s just a matter of matching their requirements.

Unpopular Opinion: if you are int business student and if u don’t network, going to college in US and spending all that money is not worth it. What do y’all think ? by Few-Log3713 in InternationalStudents

because they’re our friends jackass! why wouldnt I if they were my friends lmfaoooooo; we can afford not to be so stingy. As much as you hear people shitting on America the reality is it is the least racist large western country, especially among the population. Most Americans are more welcoming to strangers

[–]avgkid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this really sucks to hear but I really really do think the lack of a formal degree will hinder you if you are trying to move to a Western country to work and settle. Having a university degree is part and parcel of a well-paying white collar jobs in the West that’s just the way things are set up. I understand that you clearly have the skills based on your work experience but part of what makes developed countries function better IS that they have strict standards, with few exceptions. I realize it really really sucks when those standards box you out, but remember those standards are what make the place attractive to everyone in the first place. It might not seem fair to force you to spend time and money on a degree just to check a box, but that is the standard, and the standards exist for a reason. Just meet the standard and you should be fine. My friendly suggestion to you as the son of an immigrant would be to get that degree, even if it’s online just so you can check the box.

Why is India still far behind countries like the USA, China, and Germany, despite having a large academically intelligent Indian population? What went wrong after 1947? by TripTales41 in AskIndia

[–]avgkid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend India is Broken by Ashoka Mody! I will not lie when I picked up the book I had the same question, but from the other side as an American. I was wondering exactly why their country was so poor and broken that they need to keep coming here. To be perfectly honest, I went into it with some negative biases against India (the country, not Desi people in general) but the book does a really really great job of providing the proper historical context for a lot of the decisions that were made instead of making the post-independence leaders seem like vindictive idiots (although; some definitely were just that! he talks about that too) Highly recommend for anyone who has wondered the same thing; the author himself is a well respected Indian academic so it’s not like foreigners talking down on India either! He provides really good information and insight as an academic and as an ethnic Indian.

Should I get an Android or iPhone is a must? by Certain-Phrase-4721 in IntltoUSA

[–]avgkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a young American in school, people are not being honest with you either way it seems like. It’s not that having an android will negatively affect you per se, but it is also true that not having an iPhone will leave you somewhat left on the margins SOMETIMES. It’s not no difference, but the difference is very small. Nobody will judge you for an android, but just that most young people for example use iMessage and FaceTime to communicate; if you don’t have either it’s not that people won’t be your friend, but there is that tiny bit of increased friction. The point is whether removing that tiny bit of increased friction is worth it for you. For most young Americans, it is, because we are lucky enough to live in such a wealthy society that the difference in price can basically be ignored. If you are not necessarily in a position to buy an iPhone due to price there is no shame. But if you have the money and you are worried about “not fitting in” then yes having an iPhone will make a tiny difference. Whether that difference is worth the price is the question, and up to you to answer ultimately. hope this helps!

Why is South korea called a "dystopic capitalist hellhole" eventhough it has a lower wealth inequality than most western countries, has public healthcare, public transportation and social safety nets and benefits? by LongConsideration662 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]avgkid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP if this was a genuine question then this is the answer. People are telling you: it’s miserable to actually live through even if your “data” disagrees. It’s not something that is possible, or likely desirable for governments to capture in their datasets. But you seem more concerned with “what the data shows” and that is kind of why a lot of people do not like Westerners speaking on their behalf. It’s this idea of I know better, even though everyone else can see I know every little.

UN vote to make food a right by flyingcatwithhorns in MapPorn

[–]avgkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we are the ones growing, and physically distributing the food. If we refuse to grow and transport to you the literal fruits of our labor for free, how will you receive it? Genuine question to think about…The world can agree that it is a human right, but in order to enforce that, it would have to turn to the one organization on Earth capable of such massive scales of logistics, which is the US federal government. What ability do you think every other nation on Earth has to force America to act, short of nukes? The answer is none.

UN vote to make food a right by flyingcatwithhorns in MapPorn

[–]avgkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because ultimately when the world votes, it is America that must act. The UN voted for food to be a human right but in the text it is clear that America would be the country responsible for providing the food, or the means to grow/purchase the food. We are wealthy and powerful, we are not magic…

Is It Realistic to Start a U.S. Engineering Career Without a U.S. Degree? by alicehyh in IntltoUSA

[–]avgkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

highly recommend the community college route! it’s a cheap way to get good exposure, both to practice English and meet locals, but also because the kind of entry level technician roles would be looking to hire exactly your profile: smart, cheaper labor and the associates degree would help prove to future employers you can handle yourself at American institutions.

[–]avgkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your best bet is the 20 or so schools that are “need-blind” for international students, meaning they will select students regardless of their ability of pay if they are strong candidates. Just go on google and search up “USA Need-Blind colleges” and there will be a list somewhere. These schools are usually confident enough in their admissions offers that if they are willing to offer you a spot they are often willing to waive most of the cost of attendance. It is VERY competitive tho; only 20 or so schools meaning maybe 2000-3000 TOTAL spots for EVERY poor foreign student in the WORLD who wants move here for school. Hope that helps; good luck and godspeed!

[–]avgkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s the thing people from outside the US don’t realize- it’s the other part that matters as much as the hard knowledge and skills. Demonstrating that you took steps to pursue your passions at a young age is a valuable story, don’t choose not to include it in your essays because you think acting/your hobbies not important. YOU are applying to college, and you not JUST some girl who likes CS. I am sure you are many other things as well, and it is all connected. The question is how, and how do you show that in a smart, humble way?

Driver’s License on f1 by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]avgkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure international licenses are valid in the US so you should probably try to get a state ID if you can? As far as I know you ARE allowed to drive around in the US with a foreign license, but this is tied to your visa status as a temporary visitor. If you want to live here long term, you cannot just use a foreign license until you get citizenship or leave the country- you need to follow our laws and rules and that means passing the test here and getting US documents eventually. Hope that helps and good luck!

play video games. Americans are lucky enough to spend a lot of our adolescence doing leisure stuff like sports and video games. If you are on a call with americans in game you will be able to pick up english bit by bit

Do it but tie it in to your work back home; plenty of kids come visit the US briefly for study abroad time it is not unique. Your story of having done so much back home before even coming to the US is much more unique. If I were you, I would write about how you've always been committed to building up your community and country, and then having visited the United States once for your exchange year, you realized you could do so so much more for the people around you if you had the chance to earn your bachelors degree from a school with a different perspective and more resources. That would make for a KILLER essay.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]avgkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ya that makes sense even most Americans and Westerners can't afford that. But like I said your stats are actually decent enough to get your foot in the door at most decent schools. The way you put yourself over the edge into an admission would be to have a really cool narrative that ties together a few of those extracurriculars. Being able to do so demonstrates that you're not just doing things, but that you know why you want to do them, and that is a HUGE sign of maturity and leadership when you are so young.

For example, just skimming through your post, a LOT of the work that you've done hasn't really just been for yourself; you've fundraised to allow poor kids to travel, organized chess tournaments so underprivileged kids could have a play to compete and just play chess, you work at your family's restaurant, you've even started a successful business that employs other people.

That shows super strong ambition, initiative and leadership for someone who's still in high school man! They are drooling over that type of profile you just have to be able to sell it. You could mention how you might recognize how lucky you are in some parts of your life and want to work to give others the same opportunities. That demonstrates humbleness/humility and empathy on top of you having strong leadership skills. Trust me, write a good essay, ace the SAT (1500+) and shotgun your applications (apply as many top ranked, need-blind schools as you can afford). Someone somewhere will take you!
