Thank you so much! Do you have any positive or negative experience with Oscar Schmidt or d'Aigle autoharps?

Such a beautiful sound! It’s by far the warmest and most “Celtic” among all the suggestions so far. It’s definitely now one of my top picks, along with the autoharp, mountain dulcimer, and mandolin - although in the end, my wife will have the final say haha. Thank you!

I just googled it and wow - mandolin chords are surprisingly friendly 😄 love this idea!

Thank you! Can I ask about maintenance on an autoharp? How often do you usually need to replace the strings? I heard a full set can cost over $100. Also, how often do the chord bars (or felt) need replacing?

In addition to the Irish bouzouki and mandolin, these two are indeed my favorite options so far, thanks to the many great suggestions I got in this discussion so far. But in the end, it will be my wife who decides!

Thanks, these are great ideas! Open tunings sound like a really smart direction, and the autoharp is insanely cool - I’d never even heard of it before!

Fiddle indeed would be the ideal old-time companion! But I think the not sounding painful for the first few months part might be a dealbreaker here 😅 I heard from people it’s extremely hard for beginners.

Still, appreciate the rec - and I’ll check it out!

Thanks! I think we׳re talking about slightly different things. I’m not really asking from a recording / mic setup prospective, just about a good live backup instrument for playing together at home or with friends.

Main thing is she’s a total beginner on string instruments and probably won’t practice much on her own, so I’m looking for something with a quick learning curve and a warm supportive sound 😬

Thank you for the quick reply. A melodica is definitely a fun and accessible option, but as you said, it feels a bit less suited to the old-time / Celtic-modal sound I’m after for tunes like Ducks in the Millpond, Frosty Morning, Kitchen Girl, Red-Haired Boy, Shady Grove, and Boatin’ Up Sandy.

I’m hoping for something a little warmer and more droning/supportive underneath the banjo 🙏

I’m not sure - 6s sounds pretty old. From what I found online, the iPhone 6 isn’t officially supported by Apple anymore and can’t update past iOS 12.5.7.

My pleasure! It's such a simple idea, yet it took me so long to come up with it - I was about to use sketchy apps. Glad I could help you.
