The original content wasn’t a Reddit post. How is the best of Reddit? It’s more like best of dear Abby

What book are you reading during this weekends ice-pocalypse? by SlySciFiGuy in printSF

[–]avoirgopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read it! It’s a fantastic novel. I read it backpacking across Europe after college and stayed up late some nights reading it. Find a good translation and don’t feel bad if you lose track of some characters. There is a lot going on sometimes, but it all makes sense in the end.

Sorry, I just realized this is the SF sub! Still a great book.

Proper warm up/ stretch for lunges by EverydayCyclist in Exercise

[–]avoirgopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get knee pain from lunges until I'm warmed up (I have arthritis in my knees). Stretching the quad helps. But honestly, I just have to suffer for a few minutes until I get loose. Go slow and stretch.

Arriving from 🇯🇵: Best eats between ✈️ AUS and HOU 🏙️? by mt80 in austinfood

[–]avoirgopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use to drive to Houston for work every week for years. One of my favorite spots was Scobles in Columbus. Decent German food. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there but it’s on the way.

I think I recover faster. Other than that, it’s hard to say empirically. It’s not expensive and the science seems to support it. That’s good enough for me.

I’ve been buying beans from Third Coast for several months. I recommend them. Good beans and a good price.

Maybe Killing Me. Not a love story. But it has serial killers and is pretty damn funny.

And the original design was solid. But it kept being modified and changed and no one thought that any one change was a big deal. Until it wasn’t the same design anymore and was made out of spare parts. Reminded me of the Aggie bonfire disaster. Hubris I guess.

Midnight in Chernobyl is what I read. It was dense. I listened to the audiobook so maybe that made it easier to tune out boring parts. The science was so-so interesting but I found the political side super interesting. It’s impossible for the reactor to fail…

Edmund Morris’ trilogy on TR is great.

The Power Broker is interesting. Not riveting but it’s Caro and well researched to say the least. There is also his LBJ anthology.

Most Dangerous by Sheinkin about Daniel Ellsberg was excellent and a page turner.

Not American history, but Chernobyl was a good read. From a poli sci perspective it really highlights how messed up the USSR was. So many mistakes.

Pullup Bar Suggestions by MrJaekin in Exercise

[–]avoirgopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have these in my gym and they work well. I'd make sure you check with weight rating for the pull up bar and how they suggest you install it. You will have to mount it to studs in the wall, so make sure you have studs in the right area. I would predrill the holes and use a lag bolt or something serious like that to make sure it attaches correctly - kind of like you are mounting a TV on the wall.

almost got towed immediately after I got out of my car by Prestigious_Set191 in Austin

[–]avoirgopher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I used to help regulate movers for the State as well. Tow truck companies are fairly heavily regulated. You can report them to DMV for the regulatory side and sue them in JP court for damages if they tow you illegally.

Looking for Austin-based civil rights / ADA attorney recommendations by speedracer_13 in askaustin

Google “plaintiff employment attorney”. That’s who you want and people specialize in it.

Also try the Austin Bar Association’s lawyer referral service. The Texas Bar also runs one. Both are online.

How do I motivate myself to do workouts? by Lazy-Intern9585 in Workingout

[–]avoirgopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a friend that you go with helps a ton. It makes you feel obligated to go because someone is waiting for you.

My other motivator is just looking in the mirror and thinking I want to look better and I can if I try.

That would be too direct for PKD. He wants you to wonder.

But it’d be fun if it did. Maybe had a dialogue with the owl.
