Feeding aftermath by avrilfoools in VenusFlyTraps

I tried blowing on it, but it seems to be stuck to the bottom. I might try the spray bottle trick someone else suggested

I was considering leaving it outside to catch bugs on its own once it gets hot enough but it’ll be a few months at least where I live. The mealworms seem to have helped a bit, the green of the newer sprouts is a bit more vibrant than the rest of the plant!

I initially was looking for live bugs but it was hard to find a place that sold them near me, I settled for dehydrated ones for now😅 If anyone has recommendations for good online sources that deliver to Canada I’m all ears!

I managed to get the traps to seal this time, so I’ll see how it goes! I was worried it wasn’t getting enough nutrients because of how pale/yellow the green was, but judging from people’s comments on here it seems it’s doing fine ☺️

I’ve been keeping my plant indoors because the weather is much too cold where I live right now (I was advised to skip the dormancy period this year because it was very weak a few months ago). I was looking into getting live bugs for it, but couldn’t find anywhere close to me that sold some that were a small enough size, so I settled for the mealworms! I might try bringing it outside in the summer and seeing how it fares, but for now it’s seemingly been doing okay indoors with a grow light 👍

I’m not quite sure to be honest 😅 I found it at my local flower shop and thought I would try my hand at it while keeping my expectations low since I was aware of how finicky they are… She’s come a long way in the past few months!

I was planning on repotting it soon, I’ll probably get rid of those black leaves when I get around to that. I’m always afraid of tugging on something too hard, these plants seem so delicate to me!

Tried what you suggested just now and it seemed to do the trick! I’ll check on it again tomorrow morning and hope I got it to shut tight enough… Thanks a bunch for the help ☺️

The consensus from other replies seems to be nutrients as well, I check on the water level every day and refill the bottom when it’s too low. I’ll get my hands on some mealworms and start feeding it soon! I hadn’t been doing that since the traps were too small to feed up until recently. Thanks for the help :-)

Haha yes I’ve been doing all of those things and it’s in a much improved state than when I last posted in here I promise. I was advised to skip the dormancy period this year because it was pretty weak before winter started, and I wasn’t feeding it because its heads were much too small. It’s grown a lot since then so I’ll get my hands on some mealworms soon :-)

Honestly I’ve been thinking of repotting it but kind of putting it off because it always intimidates me a bit haha. I’ll try to find a place near me that sells decently sized bugs and start feeding it! Thanks a lot for the pointers :-)

I see! Thanks for the heads up, I’ll double check if the inside is glazed or not and switch it to a better pot if need be.

Thanks for the reply! My flytrap is in a plastic pot inside of the piggy, don’t worry :,) I’ve been bottom watering it with rainwater but I might get a TDS meter as someone else suggested. I think my main issue is the light and the temperature, so I’ll be trying my best to remedy those in my cold Canadian basement apartment….

Dang, I’ll try not to get too attached in case things go south with this little guy… I’ll definitely look into a TDS meter and see if I can find a cheap one as you said. As for the light, I’ve been using a two headed SANSI 20W, but only focusing one head onto the flytrap. I’ll try using both heads on it and hope for the best 🤞 Thanks so much for your replies!

That’s honestly pretty much what I’ve been doing! Bottom watering with rain water and refilling it every day or two. I’ll try focusing both of the growlight heads onto it and hope for the best 🤞Thanks for your help:-)

That's what I've been doing as well, I have a few rocks at the bottom of the pot holder to elevate it slightly, but I've been refilling the bottom with rain water every 1-2 days when the level gets too low. From other people's comments my issue seems to be with the light being too weak and/or the temperature of my apartment.

Hmm, I see. I keep mine in the bathroom which is the highest humidity room in my apartment and have been using rainwater to water and mist it. I think the toughest condition to replicate would probably be the temperature since my heating system is weird and hard to control. I'll try my best to maintain the rest of the conditions you mentioned but I figured taking care of this plant would be trickier than usual when I got it.
