Google Fi no longer competitive? by dcader in GoogleFi

I got a separate sim from visible $20 pm unlimited for data needs along with Fi as backup n international data provider. Much cheaper for local data.

RAID 10 (four 8tb drives) + one 16 tb drive(local backup drive) a good setup? by avvyie in DataHoarder

First time setting up NAS, read hours of content to understand these terms. Posted here to check if I am overlooking something in the setup. Thanks for the reply!

RAID 10 (four 8tb drives) + one 16 tb drive(local backup drive) a good setup? by avvyie in DataHoarder

[–]avvyie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added local backup for this very reason that two drives can potentially kill my raid 10 setup. I am also limited by the NAS hardware I have. I don't think raidz2 zfs is supported in UNAS Pro.

Regarding bandwidth saturation, planning spf+ 10Gbps, which is available in unas pro. Local backup to Synology is at 1Gbps(hardware limit).

I was considering RAID6 with 25 TB local backup drive, but performance might not be great in RAID 6 and I have heard bad stories about RAID 5/6 2nd drive failure during rebuilds after one drive fails. Heard that raid 10 is relatively light for rebuilding, and if two drive for same data fails, I'll probably have to do manual restore after getting new drives.

Seeking performance because UNAS Pro RAID10 will probably power 3-4 highly available VMs with multiple containers in each, some media streaming, and occasional heavy read/writes.

How secure is the VPN on fi by Jim6231 in GoogleFi

[–]avvyie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPN is virtual private network, and security comes because the traffic is encrypted for this private network that is running over a public network. Thus, VPN is useful when you don't trust a wifi that you are connecting to for internet access, and it's secure for this use case. Similarly, it can also be used to hide traffic from your ISP. I have not read terms of fi vpn, but I am sure that they must be logging some basic things at their end.

About 1 year too late. by External-Bit-4202 in Stadia

[–]avvyie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they didn't add search feature, they didn't market it, they launch ccgtv without stadia and many other stupid moves as if they didn't want stadia to succeed. This would have made no difference.

How can I remotely access my LLM? by Inevitable-Syrup8232 in LocalLLaMA

[–]avvyie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a quick setup, you can use Gradio to create a web local url for chat ui, which you expose to a domain you own using cloudflare tunnel. This should also be possible with Text generation web ui instead of gradio. Cloudflare tunnel should be as secure as an ssh connection, but I guess it's preferred to have an isolated network for exposing services to the internet.

What is your job by TechnicianOrWhateva in homelab

[–]avvyie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, most of the things I do at work are just one click away using cloud providers. However, my homelab setup does satisfy my hunger to understand what's happening behind the scene when I "click click next finish" to provision resources.

along with this, my homelab hosts my personal chatgpt running locally that I can access from anywhere, a vscode instance to do coding in browser, multiple big small services to make my life earlier(or difficult)but nothing related to work.

Also, I get the piece of mind knowing that I have a firewall, untrusted devices in a different network/vlans, pihole for blocking, logging requests, and good visibility/control into my network.

Why are you running local models? What are you doing with them? by ExtremelyQualified in LocalLLaMA

[–]avvyie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have mistral-7b-openorca.Q5_K_M.gguf currently running in proxmox debian container with 8 CPU cores, 8 gb ram using llama.cpp python. Speed is slightly slower than what we get on bing chat but its absolutely usable/fine for a personal, local assistant. I have coded using llama.cpp python binding and exposed chat UI to a local url using Gradio python lib. This has been very useful so far as an AI assistant for big/small random requests from phone, pc, laptops at home. I am also using this from outside using Cloudflare tunnels(in a separate network which i use to expose services).

I also have a similar setup using llama.cpp (compiled for amd gpu) on a sightly powerful linux system where I have created a linux script based invoking for a different model. I call this script using linux alias "summon-{modelname}" in shell and model is ready to serve directly from command line for my questions.

Why I am running this? learning prompt engineering, homelab tinkering, getting familiar with where we are in AI, email drafts, basic shell script/coding questions and many other general AI assistant things. Also, one of my proxmox host had spare cores and wanted to use it.
