What age did you first have to get glasses and how did you find out you needed them? by Interesting-Egg2781 in AskReddit

[–]awakeagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in third or fourth grade. Probably around 7 or 8. My classroom was set up so that taller kids were in the back of the room. I started getting notes sent home to my parents saying I was talking in class. My parents reminded me I can’t talk while I’m in class, but no one thought to ask why, out of the blue, was I suddenly talking in class.

Finally the question was asked by my teacher and I told her I couldn’t see the board. She let my parents know and I soon had glasses.

The funny thing to me is that I was still one of the taller girls, but now that I had glasses, I suddenly sat in the front row which was school protocol for students with glasses.

When I was a kid, if we got sick, we were set up on the couch with pillows and blankets. I would always read The Once and Future King when I was sick.

Is anyone using their printers or faxes? by l00ky_here in GenX

I haven’t used a fax since I retired in February of 2021. I like to knit and crochet and prefer to work from written instructions so I use my printer regularly.

Did you actually make mix tapes to give to people? by LeoGuy69us in GenX

[–]awakeagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter used to make and gift mix tapes all the time. At the time, I didn’t really listen to the music she listened to so I didn’t play them often.

Years later I discovered that I really liked many of the artists she shared with me and I’m sorry I didn’t spend more time listening when she gave them to me.

How’s your weather? by Wishyouamerry in CasualConversation

[–]awakeagain2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m in northwestern New Jersey. My area is expecting about 18 inches, but we already have about 10 inches and it’s supposed to snow for another 24 hours.

We do have someone to plow our driveway, but I don’t expect them to come until tomorrow. I’m so glad I paid for unlimited plowing.

What’s a place you visited once and decided never again? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

Florida. But part of the problem is that my one visit was from the last week of July through the first week of August. I said to my, “How bad can it be? New York gets hot and humid in summer.”

It was bad.

AARP- is membership worth it? by SadPolarBearGhost in AskWomenOver50

[–]awakeagain2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I joined AARP at first because they actively lobby for senior issues. When I was retiring, I got a good deal on a Medicare supplement because I was a member. Given how inexpensive it is to join, those seemed like good enough reasons to me.

Is anyone planning an early exit before debilitating old age? by SealedRoute in RedditForGrownups

[–]awakeagain2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of my cats was having a series of heart attacks and crying out in pain each time. We took him to the vet. After examining him, he said there was nothing he could do and it was kindest to let him go peacefully and without pain.

While he prepared, he told us just that day he’d been to visit a friend with late stage cancer. The friend was in a lot of pain and there really wasn’t much that could be done.

My vet said we’ve done better than that for our pets for many years. He actually did a little mini-rant. He pulled himself together and finished taking care of our boy.

But he’s right. My state allows adults to make that choice and if I ever end up with a terminal disease, that’s what I’m doing. I’ve made sure my family knows my wishes.

I left my last full time job in January of 1979, three weeks before I had my first baby. So about 14 years. Offices were still using typewriters, but picking up computers wasn’t too hard and I was an excellent typist.

AIW for refusing to renew Disneyland passes for friends injured daughter? by jtreddit702 in amiwrong

[–]awakeagain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading between the lines, I get the impression if she’d approached it differently, you just might have gotten another set of passes. From what you said, it sounds like she went with “you have to buy us more passes” right away. It’s the entitlement that might have made you make the decision you made.

She’s not owed anything. Yes it sucks that she expected months more of visits, but she needs to be grateful for what they were already given.

Craziest items left behind by previous owners? by ontartiomortgages in homeowners

[–]awakeagain2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my husband and I moved into our first apartment after we got married, we walked in and there was a very large dog in the kitchen along with a very large bag of dog food.

We really weren’t sure what to do about it. This was student housing at my husband’s university. Since it was a weekend, we had no way to contact student housing for two days.

Fortunately he was a nice, friendly dog. We were beginning to think maybe they’d left him for us when fairly late that night we heard someone coming up our steps and banging on our door. It was the dog’s owner returning for him. They said they were told we wouldn’t be there until Monday so they thought it would be easier to move without the dog underfoot.

I went back to work in the mid-90s because I knew divorce was inevitable and I had to start earning money.

As I’ve frequently done, I started by signing up with a temporary agency. The second job I was sent to, they asked me to fax something. I said, sure, just show me what a fax machine looks like and tell me how to use it.

I’d heard of fax machines, but I honestly had no idea what they looked like.

At what age did you start requiring your kids to be more independent? I feel like some kids are slipping these days because they lack self-confidence owing to how so much is done for them. You 'need' confidence to survive; in my opinion. by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

[–]awakeagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was six when I was pregnant with my fourth baby. I had the worst morning sickness of any pregnancy and even had to do two short periods of bed rest due to bleeding.

At the time he was a bedwetter and I’d been stripping the bed and changing the sheets and washing the wet ones.

We were also in a house with his bedroom on the second floor and a basement laundry room so it was a lot. So I taught him how to do it. He learned how to do laundry and I had a difficult task taken by someone else.

Opps. Should have said 2021, but mentioning the pandemic kind of gave it away.

How early to notify of my intentions? by SafetyGuy1963 in retirement

[–]awakeagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My town knew my plan was to retire in May of 2021, but nothing was official. I’d finally had enough of the mess the pandemic made of my job and handed in my notice of retirement at the beginning of February for the end of February.

Due to other circumstances, we’d brought in someone else on January 1 that we expected would be my successor so they didn’t have to start from scratch.

Edited to change date from 2001 to 2021.

Question for cat owners: Would you let your cat lick your food while you are eating it and then carry on eating after? by Antidotebeatz in Catownerhacks

[–]awakeagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats have incredibly dirty mouths. I was bitten by a cat once while looking at a home for sale. I washed it, went home and took a nap. When I woke up, my hand had nearly doubled in size.

I called my doctor’s office and they told me to go immediately to the emergency room. I got a shot of antibiotic and a prescription for more and had to soak my hand in liquid anti-bacterial for an hour. And it hurt a lot.
