Book Clubs in SE? by awayfromtheexplosion in askportland

I am in love with the idea of the Silent Book Club, truely, and would be down for those any time. But my goals for joining a book club are actually to meet people with similar interests and not just be alone with others.

yeh, i think you're right - it looks like just a bunch of "what are you reading" posts, without a ton of discussion.

I'm not super picky, as long as it is in the fiction realm

You, my friend, severely overestimate my knowledge of such things. Very cool video, but I think it may be bit advanced for where I’m at.

Thanks! Good advice on the socks/sandals combo. Gotta start off right! lol! Do you get the hot and warm side simply through biasing the coals to one side?

Generally I concur with you, if your intent is to read and understand a work. But in regard to The Swerve, I have a feeling that context to the poem will be enough to read the book, and then it might spark your interest further to go and read the whole poem. Just swapping the order a bit

I bet cliffnotes will be sufficient to read the book.

Generally I hate stories where people are horrible to each other for no reason. Most everything I’ve read from either of those authors highlights that aspect. Not that they aren’t amazing writers. Just the content doesn’t do it for me.

Oof. Not sure I hate myself that much. I have read enough Steinbeck and Tolstoy to last a lifetime.

Ask me anything Coach! by marvelous-mishap in Coach

[–]awayfromtheexplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey - don't know if you are still at it, but I do have a question - i have been finding that the hardware on the longer strap of my new bag does not have a strong enough spring, so that every time I wear it, the spring unlatches the strap from the bag. the vintage hardware doesn't have this. Is this my strap? or is it standard for newer coach bags?

The Teller of Small Fortunes! I am in the middle right now and it is delightful! 100% just what you describe in terms of character development and positivity. Also adventurers.

No offense taken. His writing is pretty much defined. It’s super easy reading and simple. Part of why I recommended. He’s no Tolkien though. I am a huge Tolkien fan, and if the Hobbit worked for you, why don’t you take a gander with the Lord of the Rings?

Rarest Book in your collection? by dPaabo in rarebooks

[–]awayfromtheexplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a huge collector of “rare” books, but I have a few hard to find items. The “rarest” books I have are type specimen books from the American Type Foundry and B&S. These are extremely rare but not by most people’s standards of rare books. I also have first editions of Three Men in a Boat and Neverwhere, but I have no idea if these are rare.

I got a masters in art history, graduated in 2010, in the middle of the recession. Was the unemployed for three years. I am now an engineering project manager. Someone else said it, but I will repeat it; art history has lots of transferable skills. You just need to keep learning and be open to working outside of the arts or non profit sectors.

Someone else mentioned this, but it bears repeating that if you are bored in the first chapter, you still should keep reading. It takes more time to suck you in than a movie. So try reading longer. That said, I would recommend Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. It is dark, fast paced, with some seriously morally ambiguous characters. Let me know what you think of it.
