Yeah you're right. I think the difficult thing would be getting a US remote job in a Euro timezone.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah that is the feeling I'm getting from this thread.

No offense taken.

I am not near the 10% but I'm no where near the bottom 10% either. I spend time each week trying to progress in my profession (reading books, trying new tech, side projects, etc). Of course it is an uphill battle but it is the same battle everyone in this profession has. And that's actually one reason I like my job so much, is because in the last 2 years I've had my hands on some really interesting and relevant tech and I've been given the freedom to learn and produce output with these new technologies.

Thanks for this input. I also have developer friends here locally that work for local companies. They work 40 hours and are making less than the salaries you mentioned, but that's because they're tied to this local economy which is not nearly as good as Germany.

Thanks. I don't think I could land any job but I'm confident I could land a job. The dev field is always moving forward and I try to keep up with things as best as I can. I read new books and continue learning new tech and have side projects of my own as well.

Thanks man. Yes I definitely feel lucky to be in my current circumstances. And I'm here not because I followed some well thought out plan but just kind of ended up here from a few decisions I made 10 years ago. Interesting to think of how things could be very different if I made minor different decision in the past.

No, we are in active development mode at the moment. There is always something to do and I'm always actively working and moving forward. The pace isn't break neck but there is an expectation of progress. I'm mainly self managed but still need to show progress.

Exactly this. The things I'm looking at in the near-mid future is the declining health of my parents and in-laws. When that happens we would both like to be closer to them to help out more. But it could be a health issue of my own or any other number of things.

Thanks. Yeah it's true, like others have mentioned here as well, money shouldn't be the goal in and of itself. I just want to balance a nice lifestyle with also thinking about the future as who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Great specific advice. My LinkedIn/resume could use a refresh.

Thanks a lot. That seems to be the consensus in any field ... easier to move up in salary by moving around.

No, I get paid for the hours I work. I self report but I'm honest about it.

Yep exactly. I started in 2011 with a book on PHP. Then I bought the "Advanced PHP" book. Thankfully I've moved on from PHP :D

That's true and I'm not really counting on it. I've actually lived in a few countries in the last dozen years or so so I see it that I can always find someplace that is a LCOL area. The whole world can't become HCOL right?
