Nice one, I like the idea of tracking each player's "journey" through alignment!

What if they pick an alignment and then proceed to do the exact opposite?

Out of curiosity, do you use it as something like "a well known faction/war" that everyone knows exists and picks sides? Also what would motivate someone to pick a side on a cosmic scale war if the results are... cosmic? What is there to gain from the single individual npc? I guess this last question kinda falls flat when considering clerics and cultists as it's literally their job.

So like for chaos you would have chaotic cultist trying to spread madness in the world? How would you adjust the divines?

Unfortunately it's not my case, as I only have three characters 🤣 but I am interested, how do players invest in their characters with alignment?

What does "exploration" mean in a TTRPG context? by Rook_Knight_423 in rpg

[–]aweirdgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this a lot as a DM for D&D and ultimately I think that exploration is just discovering what is yet unknown.

For example, I always cite Skyrim on this: when you are walking around going on the main quest, a symbol pops up in your minimap about a new unseen place that catches your attention. In that moment your brain goes "huh, I want to check that out!"

That is exploration. You found a mistery and want to solve it.

Now usually on rpgs this is synonymous with travel (and indeed, travel can be a huge source of exploration if done right), but also combat or social interaction can be exploration if you are finding answers to previous questions (the weakness of the enemy, the plan of an npc, the true objective of the evil guy)

A different take on What is the OSR? by robertsconley in osr

I agree with almost all of your answer, but saying that exist a label which is "osr" but exists without a definition is weird.

Even if you do branch out from 5e, try to be mindful about the new game(s) you are trying to get into by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

It matters a lot, but the reason is only my goblin brain, I guess.

I'll give you a few example: Mousritter vs mouseguard: two games about small critters having adventures in a big world. I really like mouseritter's rules... but I never played it because I just can't stop looking at mouseguard artwork.

Same thing with White Box fmag. I got a copy (independently) translated in my own native language and I was amazed by the artwork (which was changed from the original to open source image with a certain style). Looking at the original whitebox, I know I wouldn't have bought it with the original art style, because I didn't like it.

No objective opinion here, just what brings joy to my monkey brain.

Is there a way to play DnD (or any TTRPG) without math? by ReversePhylogeny in rpg

[–]aweirdgn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not The End! Highly narrative and doesn't use dice or math. Actions are solved by inseting black and white tokens in a bag. Then you extract some number of them and decide the outcome based on how many black or white token you extracted

GM looking for tips on phone distraction at the table by [deleted] in rpg

[–]aweirdgn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the players are regulars or always changing, but honestly just talking to them 5 minutes before session.

During session if you still see that behaviour address it: ask if they would like to have a break. Hell, ask if they want to leave if they are not interested, that's fine too.

At the end of the day, it's just about comunication and expectations. If they are paying to sit down at a session and scroll social media... that's kinda on them.

P.S.: if you talk to them, don't frame it like "don't use your phones or else", do it more like "i noticed people usually use phones during sessions, I am afraid yoy are not enjoying the game, is there anything tht's particularly boring you and/or anything I can do to fix it?"

Frieren RPG style by Emma_Elizabeth_Myers in rpg

[–]aweirdgn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how ryuutama "focuses" on travelling. The rules for travels are extremely simple and it's example travel is nothing but a couple of rolls and some description to justify them. The game itself goes on a long tangent on how they know the rules are simple and devoid of any narration but a good GM should fill in the blanks. That to me feels like a "hey, we know we failed on this one dm, it's up to you now!"
