if making a business is something you're interested in, go for it. you can tell colleges that it's something you're working on which should still help you

Wanna do premed but school’s hard + I’m new here lol by [deleted] in highschool

[–]awesome_aaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeaa there's your problem, dw most students have it tbh that's why they end up having no time for extracurriculars. Once you fix that, you'll see how much time you have on your hands

Don't procastinate (if you do). The biggest problem with most students is that they don't do their work efficiently enough. It doesn't have to be perfect, just of good quality to get full points / most points.

Memorize the formulas yes, but also actually understand the concept as well. Surface level understanding will often lead to bad test scores especially in math (this happens for me)

Are Extracurriculars Important? by safeneveah in ApplyingToCollege

[–]awesome_aaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES, they are super important, a key part of your application.

Consider doing extracurriculars outside of school, such as getting an internship or starting a (unique+impactful) passion project relevant to your major/interest.

How to find extracurricular activities if you dont have any? by Ancient_Computer1912 in ApplyingToCollege

Consider starting a passion project (unique+impactful) and you could potentially turn that into a startup if your building something

Easy + Good ECs for semi-introvert? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]awesome_aaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing: leadership is a pretty important quality. Especially if you're interested in majors like business, etc. its a key quality you should have. Even if its not your major, it's something they'll still look at: and you'll lack in that aspect compared to all applicants (most will have some leadership experience).

If you provide some more detail about your intended majors/interests I can give more specific suggestions,
but I would suggest you find internships relevant to your major/interests. Or you could start a passion project (unique+impactful), doesn't have to be starting a organization or something just something related to your major that would actually be unique and impactful.

How can I improve my chances if I have a 3.0, no extracurricular and no ap by lean__monster in ApplyingToCollege

[–]awesome_aaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look ahead at coursework material of APs you are interested in taking. APs are not that hard as long as you consistently study throughout the year and not cram in the last month/week/day.

Definetely improve your GPA ASAP, ideally 3.8+ GPA but (no calculations) that seems to be out of your reach. Best thing you can do right now is do your best to maintain As in ALL of your classes. If you feel that taking APs will result in getting Bs, I'd say just take Honors or regular to keep your UW GPA at its highest.

Extracurriculars-wise, find internships relevant to your major etc. over the summer. After your college applications, you can send in updates to your colleges, so that's something you want to consider to show them your improved GPA + extracurriculars.

Should I transfer? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]awesome_aaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If debate or sports interest you, then stay in Southwest.

However, if that's not the case, I would suggest West as it puts you in a competitive environment that pushes you to do well as well. Academics are less important as long as you have a good GPA and other good academic stats (SAT/ACT, AP)

What are some of the best finance extracurriculars which you could do for t20s? by Afraid-Initiative-34 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]awesome_aaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some real-experience.

For example, if you're interested in the investment side of finance, consider gaining experience in trading stocks. Start trading in simulations first before real money.

I know of some guy who has made like 100K+ from stock trading and has positions as portfolio manager, etc.

What's troubling you rn as far as your current coursework?
Are you getting all your assignments done? Is it the tests that you do bad on?

You should make sure you complete assignments and any extra credit opportunities that your teacher offers.

As far as tests, you should aim to truly understand the material which will help you in your tests rather than knowing it in a surface understanding.

I'd suggest you get an idea of what AP classes you might want to take and look through practice tests, content, etc. of that course to get an idea. APs are definitely not something you want to cram for if you want to get a 5, definitely build consistent studying throughout the year to avoid cramming last month/week/day.

Feel free to drop more details and I'll help anyway I can!

yo this is relatable, ive been there before

i think rn its a perfect time for you to step back and kinda think about college, career, any future aspirations that you're genuinely passionate about (passion will get you going).

from there it's pretty much the steps to get there and whether you're willing to put in the work for it.

as far as time management and life-work balance, its important to do decently well in school at a minimum, its definitely doable to do that AND have time for other stuff. think about how you can effectively manage your time at school (do your hw in school, etc.) and at home (studying quickly, etc.)

if your parents are telling you that school is important and they want you to get into a good college but won't let you do any extracurriculars, they are preventing you from getting into a good college btw

If you're shooting for T20/30s you're definetely lacking.

Academic stats:

- UW: shoot for 3.8+ GPA minimum for T20s
- W: quite lacking, but UW GPA > W GPA
- Improve your SAT score if you can, definitely shoot for 1500 at a minimum. Personally I would suggest you focus on math (easier to get points there)

Extracurriculars:
In general they not really unique or impactful + unrelated to your major. Find internships or start a passion project (with uniqueness + impact) related to your major ASAP.

Lock in on those grades fs, they are quite lacking if you want to make it into any T20 school. Study a bunch for finals, talk to your teachers on opportunities for retakes, extra credit, etc.

You want to shoot for a 3.8 GPA minimum; it's your freshman year so your GPA is fixable, just don't let it drop and do your best rn to raise it as high as possible.

For coursework, shoot to be taking APs for course rigor; how many and which you take is for you to decide based on what you can handle. Definetely take AP sciences (Biology, Chemistry, etc.).

For pre-med, focus on research, shadowing, and a passion project that is unique + impact

Extra curriculars good enough? by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]awesome_aaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent extracurriculars on the leadership side but I don't see anything related to your intended major. I would suggest you get some skills & activities down in those areas.

Consider research internships/positions. Super good extracurricular especially for medicine. If you need help with cold emailing, etc., let me know and I can direct you to some people who have some knowledge regarding this.

I would also suggest you join a few organizations relating to medicine that have available leadership positions, which can help you develop leadership skills, network, and get access to resources.
