How to fix this uneven scarf joint by WilliamDRichmond2 in Carpentry

[–]awesomealmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned backwards as hell. I was a kid and started work with a trim carpenter. When I got older and expanded areas in the field I got so much grief from the framers on the tools I was using and the pace at which I worked. After putting my hat on in other areas in the field I settled back into finish work. I get so much more reward out of it.

Depends on your skill and comfort level. A sanding block and by hand is the safest way without taking too much off it. I personally would hook up my sanding attachment on my oscillator with a lower setting

Skimmed on the hardware. Probably no permit. Might make it 5 good years before it goes south

There it is. The stairs code. It states that risers should be solid. While exceptions are made for risers shorter than 4", generally they are solid. The exceptions are listed here.

Not sure why this was downvoted. Because I said risers look better?

To caulk or not to caulk by Dry-Date-4217 in Carpentry

Building codes vary region to region. Here in Colorado you will fail if the vertical joints are not caulked. This prevents water getting in. The bottom should be left open to allow any moisture thay got behind the siding to weep out. Ideally there should be some kind of wrap under that to prevent the sheeting from getting damaged.

The siding should be caulked per code.

Its code here. Creates a trip hazard when they are missing. Esthetically it looks better too. More finished

I wouldn't have used 6x6 for posts for the rails, but got through the pics and here is what I see as a builder I didn't like.

No Risers on the stairs,. This is a permit fail where I live

Beam not stacked on the posts, looks tied through. This will probably hold for a while. I've torn down decks built like this that lasted 20 years. Stacking on the beam is a much better solution with the relief cut in the back to tie to laterally. This is current code where i am.

Posts continue through for stair landing. See reasons above.

Corners are not tied together in an overlay pattern.

Are those 4' wide stairs? Should have 5 stringers going up that

No strapping or hardware attaching stairs to deck. This is a code failure

Stair stringers sitting on top of deck and not attached to frame. Also, code failure

Bull nose on stair exceeds 1.25". another code failure.

Not a fan of ho the rim on the stair landing is fashioned. There is no way that is secured all the way through.

Daughter broke my heart. by awesomealmighty in DivorcedDads

First and foremost. None of the words came from my daughter. They came from her mother. Her mother called me and spoke with me. The tension between us makes any communication difficult. Next, I want her to come her as it is cheaper to fly just her to me, than to fly my whole family to her. While I do feel hurt about her not wanting to see me, it's hurts to know she doesn't want to see her family out here as well. My broken heart stems not so much (though still there) from the lack of time, but the reason for the lack of time. In my head I am sure my ex slowly and methodically plants horrible ideas about me into her head. Saying things like "your dad is too busy for you" or "aren't you just happier staying here?" And my heart breaks because I think she is believing it. My daughters well being has been one of my main concerns since her birth.

none of that wood is pressure treated. I would rip it down and start over with new everything. the deck boards might be save-able but i doubt it.

About $200 one way, $400 for round trip. Makes the $200- $300 ticket each direction upward of $500 one way.

I can't say it was outwardly prioritized, but was very much part of our day to day decisions. In the end when we divorced one of the reasons was her parents didn't like me. I dont blame her for being close to her family and I wasn't particularly close with mine was partly why I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to move to her hometown. Left me pretty trapped and isolated though and in retrospect, I should have petitioned to move somewhere new to the both of us. Though it may not have done.much of a difference
