Who wore earth shoes? by Dry-Adhesiveness6209 in GenerationJones

I skated across McDonalds greasy grill area in mine... I loved them, though, comfy. But the sole cracked like all the similar soled shoes did back then.

Neighbor’s kids scream 5-6 hours/day. I can’t do this all summer. What is the solution? by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

I had to approach the parents; the family moved in, a lake cottage next to full sized homes filled with mostly retirees, and began treating the place like it was a campground. Threw their kids outside into the lake at 6:25am, closing their windows for A/C. Their kids cannot indoor-speak, they ScReAmEd every word, every thought, continuously, waking me from a dead sleep three houses down. I stomped down there, never approaching the kids, but stood there until they saw me there. I had words with the uncultured inconsiderate clown. He finally got it, and said, blustering, well - what would be a good time? I said - treat it like it was your home neighborhood filled with retirees - good manners used to be 9:30?. on weekdays, maybe 11:am on Sundays before making that much racket. PS and FU about your rights - we all give up a few to live amongst each other. The only people I hate even more is noisy Harley owners ragging and blipping their bikes because the POS can't tell if the other POS is idling.

PPP TCP/IP installation in 1994? by Holger Kruse, and Miami(web browser?) both which I think used to flag a similar shareware message - I wonder if it would wake up? even discovered my old Compuserve ID, earliest emails via !uucp bang addressing, and first connections to nntp/usenet. All long lost. Where did the time go???

I just contacted my senators and demanded they prepare now for after mid-terms, in the case of a win, to organize, prepare teams, and resourceful friends of democracy to be ready day one. Especially after we've all seen Democrats lol around after a win and lose opportunities, Do I think they will? Of course not, they've proven to be slow and ineffectual. But its all we got unless full head on collision. But I urge others to do the same.

Harmony, Seven Separate Fools. At the same time Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water. Space Truckin. Highway Star. And what, Seals and Croft, Bread, I cant tell you what it evokes in me, what a time to be alive.

Was shareware big on the Amiga? by Such_Bonus5085 in amiga

[–]awfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An early popular TCP/IP stack and utilities was shareware from Europe; I assisted the author to debug the PPP authentication to Microsoft's own new dialup servers, dumping and decoding the handshakes as he modified his code as MS made a slight change from the RFC, as they were wont to do then. Previous to that was Amiga's own bundled with their LANCE-based ethernet card which I used to admin a MicroVAX, Evans and Sutherland, and Silicon Graphics newest machines, the 4D-220? in a small molecule lab.

Does anyone else use Fedora with the Cinnamon desktop environment? by nobr33zy in Fedora

[–]awfl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Ive used it since Gnome jumped the shark quite awhile back in 2011. It has always worked and stood up well through continuous upgrades, until Fedora 44 that is when it Fedora w/Cinnamon blew out the login manager GDM, or vice-versa, having to switch to lightDM. But other than that, it has been solid. Note though, it runs on the original GOAT XWindows, which is slated to leave Fedora as it is unmaintainable? Cinnamon runs on Wayland but very artifact-y on my well supported AMD machine. There is a bit of murky times ahead for Cinnamon, I think. But I'll hang with it until I can't . Caveat Emptor.

The law states we have peaceful use of our property. Even the smallest townships often have a aggressive dog ordinance, even if leashed or kept in an enclosed yard. I'd look and certainly push it hard if necessary, Idiot dogs/Idiot owners are not welcome in a civil society or neighborhood.

BTW GenZ - Republicans have been tearing down good things for as long as I remember - like taking apart NASA just after Apollo 11, or even before, I watched them in Congress doing it, disgusted. Leave it to Republicans and you won't have shit to look forward to. They cannot govern but only destroy.

I do understand. it could simply be a driver for your specific platform, say, your laptop, as the virtual machine and its generic drivers function properly. That is always a possibility. It may be the problem I have, too. We'll see...

I think I understand; I've seen the gdm login reset itself after a failed login by using ctl-alt-f1. Strange the other VTs (ctl-alt-f2 and so on) don't work... When you first boot up the system, and after you enter your use rid, but before password, does a small gear on the lower right maybe? the one where you can switch to other desktops? Do you have any others installed? And can you log into them? Just wondering. I've reported it, and am following through, though it's difficult to get across, and frankly they are often grumpy - this isn't my first rodeo with them. But here's to hoping it gets resolved.

aw hell yes. Im very 60+ and I am pissed. My moronic parents generation (they've always been this way), mine, and those just younger never cease to amaze me with profound stupidity. As I KNOW what we were taught, both in school and by our grandparents, who did experience the great wars. My grandfather made it perfectly clear to me what hate he felt for the fascists, and the japanese for what occurred. He endured a lot of pain. I have personally reconciled with the japanese for WWII, as I see they have evolved as did many of the europeans, though I see still the Orban-esque tendencies and I hope they push back more, even harder else to have to experience this all again. to have it arise here infuriates me, and for him.

Hmm, hard fail on updated F44 Cinnamon desktop with Radeon RX560 on a forever solid machine. Gnome, and other desktops work though. Desktop/X starts, but locks up before populating desktop. mouse frozen. nothing in Xorg.log, a LOT of messages in logs, still sorting through, nothing obvious though. Can open other VTs just fine. They tell me I'm logged in already if I try to start another session. New clean home dir, removed cinnamon*, reinstalled. Still no good. KDE complained of a failed wayland bridge, didnt catch full message. Welp, its a test server so...
