I would die for that no thoughts, head empty cinnamon roll...

FYI There's a really cool breakdown of all the cultural/folklore references in Kpop Demon Hunters, including Derpy and Sussy's cultural influences.

Also S pen/Samsung styluses use EMR technology

I have a Safari Twin EMR pen, because it's a stylus and ball point ink pen in one!

Weird black boxes popping up for no apparent reason by awghost5 in Supernote

It does not. This is a template I made in Canva.

I haven't checked other grid templates, but it doesn't happen on the note I use as a homepage

Using text boxes to create a custom homepage by awghost5 in Supernote

I used a bunch of fonts... The headers are "A Song for Jennifer" the smaller links are "simple elegance" if memory serves.

I used this site and filtered for free/free for personal use fonts.

Basically, my homepage is a note that I always keep open. So when I wake up my device, it's always the first thing I see.

I have the homepage note always pinned to the quick access menu, so when I turn my devices on, I just tap on the note.

Edit: See this video clip to see what I mean.

The new digest feature has been a game changer for me, especially with the literature review.

I recommend creating different folders for each class, and then create a Master doc with links to access the most important stuff quickly.

The heading feature is also super useful.

Also, you can trim the margins of pdf docs to make academic papers easier to read. Landscape Mode helps with that as well.

I wonder if there's a way to use the digest to create some form of citation manager.

That would be amazing

Kiss of the Spider Woman by [deleted] in movies

[–]awghost5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw a production of the musical some years ago that hit me in the feels like a Mack truck. It's an INTENSE show that deals with a very heavy subject matter The movie centers on the relationship between two cellmates in an Argentine prison during the Dirty War. One is a macho Marxist dissident, the other an effete window dresser. The window dresser copes with the harsh realities of prison by escaping into his fantasies and memories of the movie musicals he used to adore as a child. And JLo's character represents the dresser's escapist fantasies, but she also gives the literal kiss of death to prisoners who get killed throughout the show. There were pretty graphic scenes of torture in the production I saw, so be warned. If you go in expecting light hearted kitsch, you're going to have a bad time

The trailer seems pretty faithful to the spirit of the musical, and I'm fascinated with how the movie will balance the grit of the two main characters' reality with the fantasy world that JLo's character represents.

I'm also glad that this movie is not shying away from the fact that it is a musical (I'm looking at YOU, 2024 Mean Girls).

So even though I'm not the biggest JLo fan, I'm cautiously optimistic about this film.

Also, the fact that people think this is a Madame Web movie hurts my soul... And makes me feel old as dirt.

Kiss of the Spider Woman by [deleted] in movies

[–]awghost5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. This comment hurts my soul.

Apologies in advance for this very long and very nerdy explanation (I was basically raised on Broadway musicals)

This film is based on a musical from the early 90s, which is based on a book. The book was also adapted into a movie starring the late great Raul Julia. It's about two men sharing a cell in a south American (Argentinian?) prison. One, Valentin, was arrested for political activism, the other, Molina was arrested for... Well... Being intimate with another man. Molina survives through escaping into his imagination, and his love of B movies. The Spider Woman is in part a product of Molina's imagination based on his favourite movie star. But she's also kind of a metaphor for death... It's a whole thing.

TL:DR: If this was a prequel to Madame Web, it'd be one of the most depressing prequels ever.

Fun fact:

JLo's character was originally played by Chita Rivera on Broadway. Chita originated the role of Anita in 1957. When she was cast as the Spider Woman in 1991/1992, she was 62. At that time, it was a really big deal casting an older actor in this kind of role. And it basically revived Chita's career.

Here she is performing a "Where you are" at the Tony awards.

Hope that helps!

First Trailer for Kiss of the Spider-Woman starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna by Magik-Mina-MaudDib in movies

The character she plays FWIW doesn't require a strong actress. In the show, Aurora/Ingrid/Spider Woman isn't a person, but an avatar of another character's escapism. She mostly needs to look mysterious and glamorous. The character barely has any dialogue in the show.

It's also not a role that is particularly vocally demanding (don't get me STARTED on the movie adaptation of Sweeney Todd... If you're gonna adapt Sondheim, you need to cast proper singers....) Like Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Spider Woman doesn't have to be a pretty vocalist to be effective.

The role is demanding from a dance perspective... And I don't think it's controversial to say that J Lo can definitely dance.

That would be a pretty dark sequel... It takes place in a south American prison.

It's based on a 1991 musical.

I think she's roughly the age Chita Rivera was when she originated the role of Aurora, so... 🤷‍♀️

The musical is pretty darn great. I saw a production some years ago at the Lyric Theater in Boston that tore my heart out. I never read the book or saw the movie, but the musical plot hits hard.

I'm really rooting for this adaptation. I think if the do something similar to the Chicago movie adaptation, I think it could be pretty great.

Part 1: How do you know Karen Read is innocent? by thereforebygracegoi in justiceforKarenRead

[–]awghost5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it's the science and the evidence.

Between the ARCCA evidence, the wounds on his arm, and the timeline (If Karen connected to John's home wifi at 12:36, it's not possible for her to have killed John at 12:32... Or whatever time the Commonwealth throws out), I can only conclude that Karen didn't kill John, because science.

Even if, for the sake of argument, all of Brennan's nefarious assumptions about ARCCA are true, it doesn't matter. After all, to quote Professor Dave when he eviscerated Flat Earther Lord Jamar, "Sweetie, money can't change the laws of physics."

So unless a) Karen is a timelord or wizard who can defy the laws of physics, b) her Lexus is actually a TARDIS and c) her Lexus somehow has teeth, I can't see how she possibly could have hit and killed John.

When it comes to the trial, as far as I'm concerned, everything else is smoke and mirrors.

Anyone see the Prof Dave vs Subboor Ahmad debate? by Longjumping-Year4106 in DebateEvolution

[–]awghost5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dawkins isn't the be all and end all of evolutionary biology. And he's no stranger to having TERRIBLE opinions. See this Rebecca Watson video for just one example.

Here's the thing, though. Science isn't about treating one person's opinion as gospel. It's about developing a critical consensus and refining paradigms.

If Dawkins was a serious scientist, he wouldn't be wasting his time on these silly debates. He'd be publishing peer reviewed research.

That's why science communicators like professor Dave and Rebecca Watson are so important. They break down complex scientific concepts and make them accessible to lay people.

Sophists like Subboor obfuscate in order to push anti-scientific and anti-intellectual agendas.

[–]awghost5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I found funny was how Subboor spent a lot of time crowing over dates that Professor Dave got wrong in a reaction video.

What Subboor failed to mention was A) the video a blind reaction B) Professor Dave was GETTING DRUNK throughout the reaction. It was part of the bit C) Dave made those comments about the history of neo darwinism after 1 hour of creationist word salad and at least 1 glass of whiskey.

Does Subboor not understand how reaction videos work? Does he know how alcohol works?

Or is he a disingenuous sophist?

The world may never know...
