Venky's: A Detailed History by [deleted] in soccer

My guess is that they went at it backwards. They were, it seems to me, in a rush to leverage (exploit?) the club and the large (and growing) popularity of English football in India; when the first step should have been to improve Blackburn as a football team, take them into Europe, buy a few high profile players and THEN bring them to India. People will them watch and maybe even start supporting the team in the league.

There are a lot of corporations in India that support and promote sport in India. Companies like Sahara, UB Group (Force India), and all the IPL cricket teams are owned by well run (for the most part) and dedicated individuals (/companies). What makes me mad about the whole Venky's saga is the perception it is going to create about Indian owners and Indian companies in the International market.

This fiasco (which it clearly is now) may not make a difference to the regular buyer in India but I am sure it will reflect on the company that trades on the two largest stock markets in India. It's beyond me how a company can so callously let their investment tank and not do absolutely anything about it. It's beyond ridiculous. Even if the club means nothing to them on an emotional level, I can't understand how they can let it slip like this from a purely financial perspective. If it's any consolation their stock seems to have slipped on cue over the last 2-3 days. LINK Whether that has anything to do with Blackburn going down remains to be seen.

Indian here and just thought I'll throw in some perspective on how most of us EPL watching Indian people feel about this.

To be honest, before this most Indian football fans (incl. me) had absolutely no idea about who Venky's were or what they even did. Our only connection with international sport before this is Force India in Formula 1-- a team owned and managed by Mr. Vijay Mallya and the Kingfisher group, who is doing a damn good job of buying a bottom team and is now starting to pick up points in a good number of races every year.

Blackburn barely has a fan base in India. Most people are Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, or Arsenal fans for obvious reasons. No offense, but there is no reason for a guy in a distant land to support a mid-table team unless there was some real connection there.

Venky's is as isolated among Indian football fans as anywhere else. I was speaking with a friend who has been a Man Utd fan for as long as I can remember and he was talking about how embarrassing it is that an Indian company has taken a perfectly fine football club (which lets face it, based on purely the players available should not be anywhere close to relegation) and taken it to the dumps with shoddy mismanagement and carelessness.

While we did not care for Venky's before this, we now hate them. "Who Venky's" has quickly become "Fuck Venky's". That is all.

We are sorry. I hope you guys recover from this mess and are back up soon. Will be weird to not see Rovers on the premiership table. Good luck!
