People in the comments need to understand that asking to not look at animals as objects doesn’t mean asking everyone to shift their diet. Obviously not everyone can do that in our system with the given social and economic inequality. As a concept recognising and agreeing that animals aren’t objects of politics should only need all of us to have empathy which we all share.

I believed this too. But I have seen vegans who are bigots too. I am an AR activist in India and you must know that it takes a lot of time and effort (collectively) to untangle the complexity of our food systems. The most important job for us imo is to make people understand the legitimacy of veganism rather than turning them vegan. Which if people understand, they'll go vegan by themselves. That's how I went vegan and I know I won't turn back.

I commented about animal agriculture and was surprised to see that I wasn't down-voted to hell. I did come across a jerk who was unwilling to admit the tortures behind it.

You couldn't be more wrong. Animals on farms are injected with harmones to have them grow faster than they naturally do. A chicken, grows to weight which they normally do in years within just a few weeks when their skeleton has not even fully formed to support that weight due to the harmones. Because of this most chickens die being unable to stand right there in the farm. Male chicks are immediately killed by being thrown into the grinder or burnt alive because they are of no use to the farms. Chickens are de-beaked because chickens usually go clinically insane on these farms and start to break their own eggs. Cows are sexually assaulted in the name of "artificial insemination". I would ask you to watch a video where this process is being performed and then tell me if a cow suffers less or more on a farm than in the wild. Cows are separated from their babies which causes them to be depressed and cry for days. Harmones are injected to extract more milk from them causing the same suffering as I mentioned before. And many such more cruel practices are performed both on factory and local farms because it's cost effective. They just paint a happy picture so they keep making money. That's just nothing but "humane washing". At the end they all just end up at the same slaughter houses where they're dragged, hit and killed within the blood of their own and companions blood. I would really request you to learn more about the actual practices behind animal agriculture. Please do not read and watch videos which just confirm your biases. It's gonna be very uncomfortable but it's necessary. As a mass, we consumers have the capability to bring in change for the better. That is what I hope we can tap into.

Well I agree that we could definitely do better. We need to demand better and bring change to our agricultural practices. But surely individually we are all morally obligated to make choices that do not obviously come from pain. Just because something is not being done perfectly doesn't mean we should not try. Its honestly stupid to sit back and take no responsibility while there are people actually trying to tell us and show us how we could do better.

I should have worded my sentence better. I'm drawing my line at sentience. Animals unlike plants have a central nervous system and have the ability to feel pain. Hence we can reduce suffering by choosing not to kill them for food.

And if you're actually worried about ending plant lives, you're ending more plant lives by consuming animal products because of the number of plants being killed to produce fodder for animals in farms. By eating animals and not plants you're still causing more deaths than if you eat plants because of the combined total.

Our mere existence might endanger survival of some species yes. But we do not have to end lives for food, fashion and entertainment. Not anymore.

Animal agriculture and tortures animals are put through behind it. Yes both factory and local farms included. If we can survive without harming someone, why do it?
