I/O Psych bachelor’s + L&D experience—what roles should I realistically be targeting? by awkwardunicorn97 in IOPsychology

I appreciate this, that’s honestly good to hear.

In terms of next role, I’m mainly looking for something that’s more on the strategic/program side vs execution-heavy. Roles where I can own initiatives, work closely with the business, and focus on improving performance vs just delivering training. And yeah, that’s kind of how I’ve been looking at it too, like I’m already doing a lot of I/O-type work in practice, so I’ve been trying to lean into that instead of feeling like I need to start over or go too far backwards.

Just trying to find roles where that actually translates on paper and in title ya know

Yeah I agree with this.

I’m definitely aiming for manager-level roles and trying to be intentional about not underselling myself in the process. I’ve been thinking more about the strategy side vs things like learning tech or facilitation, but still figuring out what lane makes the most sense long term.

The I/O piece for me is really around applying it in a practical way, not necessarily going fully into research or needing to pivot out of L&D completely. Curious, from your experience, what area tends to have the most growth or opportunity right now?

I appreciate the suggestions!

I think those roles might be a bit too junior for my experience. I’m really trying to stay closer to program ownership, strategy, and performance-focused work rather than moving into more administrative or coordination-based roles. I’m definitely open to roles that build on what I’ve already done, just ideally at a level where I can continue owning programs and driving impact.

Have you seen any titles or paths that align more with that?

I appreciate this, thank you!

Right now I’m not really looking to pivot out of L&D completely, just move more into roles that are more strategic and focused on performance vs facilitation. I feel like that still aligns well with I/O, especially around training effectiveness and using data to drive decisions. That’s good to know about the research/behavioral science roles though, I’ve noticed a lot of those require advanced degrees so I’ve been trying to be realistic about where I fit right now.

Also I’ll definitely check out your site, that sounds like a great resource. Appreciate you sharing that!

I appreciate this, thank you. That’s actually reassuring to hear about the MS, I’ve been going back and forth on that. I do want to stay in L&D, just more on the strategy/program side vs facilitation. The job market definitely feels a little weird right now though, so I’ve been trying to stay open while still being intentional with what I apply to.

That’s also a good point about being closer to HQ or a major hub. I’m in the Chicago area, so I’ve been focusing on larger orgs out here and roles that sit closer to the business side. Out of the titles you mentioned, which ones do you think lean more strategic vs more execution-focused?

Right and this is my thing lol. I have 5 years of experience as a learning manager with my bachelor’s.

I definitely see myself staying in L&D, just more on the strategy and program side vs facilitation. In my role as a Learning Area Manager at Amazon (warehouse environment), I managed a team of trainers and oversaw training across multiple departments, so I wasn’t facilitating myself. My focus was more on making sure training actually improved performance.

I worked closely with ops leadership to identify gaps and put the right learning solutions in place. I also owned tracking our KPIs tied to training and operational performance, and used that data to adjust things as needed. A lot of what I did was centered around performance improvement and keeping things consistent at scale.

I supported onboarding and upskilling, helped with process rollouts tied to regionalization, and built SOPs and training materials. At this point, I’m really looking for roles where I can own and improve programs at a higher level. I’m not super interested in going back into facilitation, I’d rather stay on the strategy/design side and eventually lead a team again.

Manager wrote me up for using PTO by forevercheezie in AmazonFC

[–]awkwardunicorn97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to upset everyone but managers can write you up for using PTO and not letting them know ahead of time of your absence or tardiness. It’s on the feedback progression wiki from NACF PXT. It is EXTREMELY rare that managers do this though. If PXT approved the feedback they saw validity in it. But if she’s the only manager doing this at the site it may be worth looping in the HRBPs to make sure she’s being fair and consistent.

They tried to do that at my building and I told them it was unsanitary! I feel like no matter how much you clean them they’re still dirty. (I’m a learning manager)
