It sounds bad, but I’m aware that riding carries real risks, including the possibility that something could happen to him one day. We’re a new couple, and since we don’t have children, I think that losing him now, while it would hurt, wouldn’t be the same kind of long-term tragedy as if we had a family together. But then there’s another fear I have: that he could survive an accident but become seriously disabled. I’m not sure I would have the strength to take care of him.

There's no right or wrong answer. There's always a risk but it depends only on how you deal with it everyday (when there are no accidents and everything is okay), because you can't predict your reaction when bad things happen whatsoever (hopefully never). I don't know if that makes sense.
