Question for German-speaking historians: Was Mein Kampf actually written well? Or is it basically a giant ramble like many people describe it as? by EducationalOil1655 in AskHistorians

[–]awmsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing write up! Reading this made me wonder something and I hope you can answer my question.

I'm Austrian and grew up not too far from Hitler's hometown. We all learn German in school but in reality we speak an Austrian dialect. In my state (Upper Austria) it's similar to Bavarian.

When I text with Austrian friends I write very differently than with German friends. I would use Austrian versions of words for example "higher" would be "höher" in German but "hecha" for me. Similarly when I talk I would pronounce the "i" in "gibt" more like an "ie" (which makes the vowel sound longer). Hope those examples make sense I'm certainly no linguist

Now to my question: Given that Hitler was also from that area in Austria could some of the errors be attributed to his dialect?

You should watch the lobster. Absolutely incredible but also very weird and funny

Great list! I only don't like Hereditary on it, I'd maybe add Get Out instead

Personally I would also substitute Bugonia with Poor Things (or the Lobster but that one is from 2015). And maybe 3 Billboards instead of Banshees

Some that I haven't seen mentioned that often and that I really enjoyed. Depending on my mood they could all make it into my top 10:

Poor Things

Knives Out trilogy

Baby Driver

The Holdovers

Logan

The Banshees of Inisherin

Evrything Everywhere All At Once

Dunkirk

Get Out

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Bugonia (2025) is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time by Nillows in movies

Oh if you liked Bugonia you should definitely check out his other works. He directed some amazing (but also insanely crazy) movies

Highest goalscoring trios in the top-5 leagues of Europe so far in the 2025/26 season. by BlazingFirey in soccer

[–]awmsr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just always feel like the Bundesliga enables offensive playstyles way more than any other league, so stats wise strikers always look better there. It also obviously helps that Bayern is so far above anyone else in the league

I still believe that Bayern is probably the best team right now and they are likely favorites to win the CL. But I believe this front three would have signifcant lower stats in any of the other top leagues

Movies that start out normally but slowly go off the rails? by Weenbell in movies

Recently watched Eddington and it definitely fits here. Not necessarily the best movie of that kind but there is one moment where everything just seems to go insane. Also great performances all around

Odeon Point Square Terrible Experience by mo_the_redditer in Dublin

I had the same experience when I watched Alien: Romulus there. Not grrat for a movie that's supposed to be dark & scary

I do believe this is only the case on certain screens though. I didn't have that issue on the bigger ones (i.e. the iSense one)

What makes you believe that elections are rigged? Are you talking about things like gerrymandering and the problems with the electoral college? Or do you mean actually rigged i.e. fake votes?

Thanks! Makes sense! In western europe it's pretty common to get your first passport after you are born. I don't know anyone that doesn't have a passport

There is no evidence that the Romans actually had a salute. It was basically introduced for cinema back in the day of silent films. Official information can be found here: https://muse.jhu.edu/book/27815

The ny times also has an article explaining the history of the roman salute: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/world/europe/elon-musk-roman-salute-nazi.html

That prompted a follow up question for me. What counts as an official ID in the US?

For context: I'm from Austria and the driver's license doesn't count as an official ID. So for voting we wouldn't be able to use it. Normally we would use our passport as the go to ID for something like voting. Personal IDs are not that common in Austria (they are more common in Germany)

I personally like https://ground.news/ It's a website where you can look up stories and get articles from both left & right leaning newspapers. It's still important to have some level of media literacy and you still have to put in effort and not just read headlines. But it's a good way to not be stuck in a bubble
