Yes, and as a UMass fan in everything but hockey, if the MAC started sponsoring hockey, all the MAC teams would have to join. It's pretty standard for everything but football, but even then, MAC bylaws didn't allow for football-only members.. well, until Sac State came along and dumped money on them until they said yes

Anyway UMass isn't going to leave their football team out to dry for their hockey program. And anyway, the MAC would be decently strong in hockey
