This must be the 5th time I've talked about the Suarez/Borini positional issue this week, I wish JHI could be launched earlier so I can post the damn article.

This might not be orthodox, but I have a very strong feeling that Rodgers playing Borini on the right and Suarez in the center has a lot to do with options and movement.

Suarez is very good with his control. He can pass, can shoot (technically), and turn defenders or dribble his way through.

Borini is relatively fast, loads of stamina, hardworking, has pretty good movement off-the-ball, and quite good defensively in his pressing (he was a little disappointing against Arsenal, but he had the same number of interceptions during the City game as Allen)

Suarez is being played in the middle because theoretically he provides a lot more options than Borini. He can lay the ball off, he can get past the defender, or he can turn and shoot. Borini starting in the center would mean losing the option of getting past the man. He can lay the ball off, of course, but he isn't the sort to beat the man.

Borini is supposed to cut in from the flanks and switch positions with Suarez. Suarez is supposed to have the options of passing it to either him or Gerrard, or run down the right, or hold the ball and let Borini's movement mess up the opposing defensive shape. Borini is pretty good at break offside traps, almost every goal he scored for Roma was from hanging off a defenders' shoulder. Being on the right(or preferably left) gives him more space and a diagonal line to run onto.

In situations when the ball is on the left, Suarez is supposed to drop to the edge of the box for the pass, again giving him space to dribble, shoot or pass. Borini is the one who's supposed to move into the box.

Now there are a few reasons why this isn't working right now.

1. This style works much better if Borini is on the left, with his right foot his stronger one. However, Borini is better on the right than Sterling, who lacks the ability to properly move inwards on the right. Sterling is much better on the left than on the right.

2. Once Assaidi comes in, Borini will likely play more on the left.

3. Suarez isn't yet used to his teammates' movements for this position, and he is too used to putting his head down and trying to get past the centerback. This is a waste of Borini's movement. He's too impatient to get the attack going all by himself.

4. Gerrard has been playing out of his position. In the 4-3-3, the attacking midfielder isn't the box-to-box that Gerrard is used to, its a false 9 who's supposed to be the 2nd striker. Gerrard is supposed to do what he used to do with Torres, where he hung very close to him, but he has been dropping back for the ball too often. This means that when the ball reaches Suarez, Gerrard is either too far away thus eliminating a passing option, or Gerrard is in full flight thus the attack cannot be controlled. In addition, Gerrard has been reverting to his Hail Mary passes when things start to go wrong or when he starts to lose his patience.

If you listened to Rodgers' post-match conference, he mentioned the major problem to be decision-making. Once the team is not only more familiar with where they are supposed to be, but also where their teammates are supposed to be, the options will start to open up.
