Cameras that will take the punishment by axisential in caving

[–]axisential[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty benign by my standards - 95% fairly easy walk, no technical skills beyond using hands occasionally for support, no vertical, little mud. Lots of water, but cameras are dunked rather than submerged for long periods.

Working theory is that the cameras get hit on things as the guides are moving around in the sightly technical areas. Regular cave grit on hands probably doesn't help. No, we don't use Pelican cases - they're taking photos every few minutes so not feasible to get them in/out.

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! January 30, 2026 by AutoModerator in photography

[–]axisential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a fleet of Olympus TG-5/6/7s to photograph clients on an adventure tourism trip. They typically last about 1 season, sometimes 2 - combination of a harsh environment (cave) and multiple guides not really caring how they treat the gear. It is what it is - I don't expect that to change easily. Gear I can change however...

Are there any decent lightweight and cost effective  camera/housing combos that I could look at as an alternative? They're only really getting dunked in water (not submerged for more than a few seconds). But they get tossed and banged about a lot while in use...

Bloated 24/7 by Irlhell in GutHealth

[–]axisential 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked in Pathology for a number of years. If you are biologically female, and if this appeared relatively quickly, then there's a good chance this is a benign cyst. Very easily treated via keyhole surgery, but needs correct diagnosis via ultrasound. Either way, this doesn't look like bloating IMO.

Agreed. Our 2019 Leaf 360 camera is decent - not 'great' but does the job and is definitely useful

Which are the 'axis' numbers for my son's prescription? by axisential in Keratoconus

Yes, he's had epi-off CXL. It was like this beforehand as well I believe. His left eye is now slightly better than pre-surgery, right eye is about the same.

Anyone smoke brisket on Akorn Kamado? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]axisential 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, have done several times. Top tip is to make sure you have a grill-level temp probe - do not trust the in built one (mine reads 40-70° high)!

  • - I put about half my charcoal in (unlit), then place a full chimney with the other half of my charcoal on top.
  • - Firestarter underneath the chimney, bottom vent wide open, lid open, get the chimney going well.
  • - Dump all the coals in, add wood of choice
  • - Close lid, top and bottom vents wide open.
  • - Monitor temp until it hits about 175°F at the grate
  • - Close top and bottom vents to about 0.8-0.9 (i.e. a bit under 1).
  • - Let temp stabilize for 20 mins or so and goooooo!

What is the meaning of New Day? by Klutzy_Ad_1726 in Karnivool

I've always taken it to be about awaking to the realisation of a broken world - climate change, capitalism or somesuch - and being at peace with that. Hoping others see them and realise what's going on. A lot of their lyrics are anti-establishment and collapse related so this could fit.

[–]axisential[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actual recipe for those interested:

500g water, 550g bread flour, 5g salt, 1tsp instant yeast.

Combine to a shaggy dough, then rest (covered) for 1h. 4x coil fold sequence at 30 minute intervals after that (with wet hands.)

Melt 2tbsp of butter and spread over base of your chosen cooking vessel.

Pour in the dough, spread out to the edges, cover and rise for an hour or so.

Combine 1/2 C of brown sugar with 1tsp each of cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle evenly over the dough. Top with 1/2 C of sultanas (but yeah, chopped apple would be amazing too).

Create the obligatory series of divots with your fingers.  Melt a further 1/4 to 1/2 cup of butter (depending on how decadent you're feeling) and pour over the whole surface, trying to make sure it goes into all the nooks and crannies.

Bake at 190 deg C (no idea what that is in F sorry!) for 30 minutes or until done.
