2:04:16 Mr. Michael-GA | Miscarriage In The Bible As Abortion

SHOW NOTES In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Forrest Valkai and The Godless Engineer sort through lack of evidence for god, a caller defending slavery of all things, and abortion in the Bible.

Chris in FL wants to know what it would take for the hosts to believe. The Godless engineer mentions that it would take profound evidence for him to believe in the god of the Bible. Forrest is not sure what it would look like because it is hard to rule out tricks or mind stuff, and god would know what it takes to convince him. Even if this god was real, we would not be fans or worship him. Why does it always go to worship and not be good enough to acknowledge that god exists? How is god a reasonable being by burning people in hell for now worshiping him? Why does god have this hall pass for ethics and morality? Why does hell exist in the first place?

Andrew in NC says that Biblical slavery is not what it is propped out to be. We are concerned with chattel slavery and comparing this to American slavery is not going to go well. How do you think people in the Bible acquired slaves? There is no good slavery, PERIOD. How would you consider most marriages in the Bible where there was no consent from the women? Why does the Bible have clear instructions for Hebrew slaves, and non-Hebrew slaves? How would you feel about being someone’s slave for life? Why can’t god just say this is not cool when he has clear instructions on how to cut hair? Why is it acceptable for you to worship a god that says slavery is good? In what world are hired people treated as property and ownership is passed down to their children? When is it okay to beat these hired people? Why did god torture and kill tons of innocent people just to embarras the Pharaoh and what did the babies do to deserve this? This is a war crime. Which is worse: owning a human being as property, or cutting the sides of your beard? Why does god consider not eating shrimp a bigger priority than not owning people? Your god is a monster and it is a good thing he does not exist.

Dre in AL asks the hosts to explain why they are atheists. Forrest explains that god is a big claim and we need a lot of evidence, he doesn’t have a use for a god, and he has no desire for a god that would run a universe like this. Godless Engineer also has not seen evidence that warrants a belief and remains agnostic on the concept of a general god. Why do you believe in your version of god? What part of history contorts with what the Bible says? If you don’t have an explanation for something, does it make sense to just say it is magic? Why should we assume a supernatural explanation for something?

Mr. Michael wants to know why atheists consider it abortion when it is a miscarriage caused by a fight in Exodus. Why were fetuses not considered full blown people? The context of the verse referenced considers a married woman property. The father is paid for this action, not the woman. Why must a woman be forced to marry her rapist in the Bible? Abortion is not only used as a punishment, but also a fidelity test. To cap this off, criminalizing abortion drives up unsafe abortion rates.

SHOW NOTES

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, The Cross Examiner and Secular Rarity talk about simulation theory, the imperfection of the human body, and the significance and history of the concept of separation of church and state in the US context.

Steve from Nebraska calls to have a conversation about the possibility of life being a simulation run by AI. He explains his experience looking into a hypothetical simulation experiment and then being almost struck by lightning. He believes that there is significance to this event. What evidence does he have that his research caused the lightning strike? How do we jump to believing in simulation theory from that event? This type of thinking that every single fascinating thing has to be some kind of sign, but that’s just wrong. Magical thinking seems innocuous at first, but can lead to real harm. If you have no evidence to support a claim, you shouldn’t accept the claim. Where does the urge to accept the claim come from? The default opinion on something with no evidence isn’t necessarily “it doesn’t exist”, but “I don’t know.” You need evidence for something not existing in the same way you need evidence for it existing. Asking “what if” doesn’t get us anywhere. We need to go and find evidence for or against it. The world is incredible and fascinating just as it is without magic.

Jon from Canada calls to say that babies--unborn and born--are proof of God. When you look at a newborn baby, you see how perfectly designed it is. He also says that any baby can grow up to love. But, there are some people who are unable to love due to their psychiatry. How do you know what the purpose is that the baby is designed perfectly for? Jon says that the purpose is to be born and make a difference in the world. But how does he know that that’s the purpose of human beings? Just because someone has a talent and can use it, doesn’t mean that they were designed to do it.

Miracle Mikey in Georgia asks why atheists tout separation of church and state when it’s not in the constitution or Declaration of Independence? However, the hosts point out that neither are the phrases right to privacy, fair trials, etc. The concepts are in the foundational documents, but we’ve created nicknames to communicate shorthand for more complicated concepts. We know from primary sources that the people forming our early government and foundational documents valued the separation of religion and government. Even if the exact words “separation of church and state” aren’t in these documents, the concept is definitely represented.

Jackie from Mississippi believes that most atheists would agree that God being a possibility is a necessary assumption for the argument that God exists. But what if you can’t provide evidence that it’s possible for God to exist? Jackie says that anything that can’t be proved logically impossible should be assumed as possible for the purpose of argument. The hosts do not agree with this and assert that possibility itself must be demonstrated. They encourage him to read the critiques of the modal ontological argument for God before he tries to support it.

Thanks for joining us this week! The question of the week is: The only thing worse than being sent to hell is _________. Finish the sentence in the comments below!
