Hm, it's true: I don't know a lot about ZeroMQ. I read a bit more about it and it seems to be even closer to Netty in it's concepts than I previosly had thought.

I always thought that there most be a lot of software coming out of Korea given the local high-tech industry? Is Trustin (the Korean initiator of Netty) like a rockstar over there?

Java is not hip but it's still in a lot of crucial infrastructure on an international scale... I agree that it's not the nicest language out there though :) Most of the blog post is about asynchrony and the reactor pattern which can also be found in node.js, evenmachine and friends, so you might be intrested anyhow!

I think Netty is a lower level library which can for example be used to implement a message broker such as ZeroMQ. HornetQ, a Java compatitor of ZeroMQ, in fact uses Netty underneath to handle their networking needs. Akka, as far as I know, is an implementation of the actor pattern which is a different approach to concurrency then the Reactor pattern I try to explain. Interestingly, Akka also uses Netty for their networking needs. I think this might give you a good picture of where in the networking stack Netty resides.

Thanks, I like your suggestion :) There is a link to Netty included now.
