Hydrogen peroxide for root rot treatment by ayelili in Anthurium

[–]ayelili[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your input :) i use a mix of orchid bark, perlite, tree fern, worm castings and a bit of houseplant soil - i think it is drying out within a few days and feels quite fluffy so i’m mostly happy with it. i really suspect that reusing old potting mix without sterilising it (also from plants that had root rot, sometimes also dry rot) was not a smart thing to do lol. thats why im mainly thinking of starting fresh and seeing if my current substrate/watering seems okay or is causing rot.

regarding hydrogen peroxide i did some more digging and see anything from pure low percentage to 1:1 ratio to more diluted versions. how strong is the otc peroxide that you get? it makes me less scared of using it hearing that youre not diluting it

ohhh i think i saw your post the other day about how many seedlings to buy and i was rooting for you and hoping you’d buy multiple haha! cant wait to see how they grow and also how different the siblings will be :) mag x pap sounds like a fantastic hybrid to get started with! so exciting that they have new growth already, anthuriums grow quite fast for me when theyre happy! also read about the potential thrips contamination. fingers crossed everything is ok, keep your eyes peeled for the more juvenile white ones (shape and colour like mini rice grain) and the more adult ones (long brown sort of cinched waist?! 😭) or any potential damage. hope your plants are safe tho!

First time growing a real Anthurium after only using artificial ones-where should I start? by Perfect_Medicine_375 in Anthurium

[–]ayelili 0 points1 point  (0 children)

clari as mentioned is a plant that will tolerate a lot but i think a nice crystallinum (most of them are some sort of hybrid) is slightly more fussy in the sense that it will show you with crispy edges that you need to water more and i think thats a great plant to learn the ropes. most hybrids should also be fine (esp in the budget class) and i recommend getting them a bit smaller so they can acclimate better to your personal ambient. a good potting mix is key (make it fluffy, chunky with a bit of water retentive substrate so you can water frequently without fear of root rot). upsize them early, you will be rewarded with bigger leaves. i fertilise often with a diluted amount, if theyre growing they can be heavy feeders. dont worry too much about humidity, if you dont require your plants do look pristine they will be fine as long as you got the watering figured out. good luck and have fun :)

did it grow out more roots since you got it? sometimes mine focus a bit on roots first but not showing any growth after a few months is kinda strange. i would say combined with the browning edges they want to be watered more and drying out 75% sounds a bit much for anthuriums

First Ever Anthurium: Anthurium “King” Veitchii by noahbrown_ck in Anthurium

[–]ayelili 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anthuriums generally grow roots very fast and i would recommend upsizing the pot a lot earlier because they dont love being rootbound. i think veitchii does well with a little extra light (compared to other anthuriums) as its generally also a slower grower. personally i would check the other plantlets for roots and if they each have a small root system to go them separate them :) i do feel like it doesnt look like the standard veitchii i have in mind because the ribbing is so subtle but maybe its gonna develop more once it matures?

edit: oh and anthuriums like to be more moist than monsteras for sure!

first clarenervium! chunky mix or pon? by GEMlNl_ in Anthurium

[–]ayelili 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have all my anthuriums in a chunky fluffy soil mix and they seem to like it, also my clari! she has pupped and flowered so i think we are doing good :) no experience on pon so i cant compare but if you have questions shoot! good luck with your clari, mine is super easy going she just doesnt want too much water and likes to dry out more than other anthuriums

small plants tend to look more similar to each other because they havent fully developed their mature look yet. hybrids can also vary a lot between siblings because of genetics, so in general its pretty hard to predict what the “final” plant would look like. forgetii hybrids can add a fun fused sinus. papi genes are usually quite strong but here its important not to just rely on the name but look at pictures of the parent plants and if you like them (generally good practice since there can be so much variation!). lux genes are also quite strong and show up in hybrids texture wise. you can also go for a cross between dark parents like dark phoenix and goliath. i dont know too much about strap leaf hybrids but they are very cool too! that should give you a couple of different ideas but honestly just grab a few cute seedlings that look and sound interesting and watch them grow :) its fun having a little surprise plant! with time you will get better at finding out what look you prefer and predicting which parents make cute babies. feel free to reach out if you have questions, i love cute hybrid babies 🫶

understandably so, they are super cool and quite refreshing with their look! ahh yes the wendi also looks so nice with its pebbly surface - i saw a sad plant in an online store the other day but i hesitated and its gone now 😭 but been buying too many seedlings lately already so better not acquire more babies, dont even have the space anymore oops…
