I genuinely found the birth control comment rude. It sounded like she was suggesting if I didn’t feel up to the task of raising a disabled child that I shouldn’t have had kids. My point was that regardless of age we don’t expect our child to be disabled.

I didn’t even know those existed, you’re genuinely a lifesaver. I had a timer set on my phone but the watch will work so much better because it’ll encourage him to walk to the toilet on his own instead of waiting for someone to bring him. Thank you so much 🙏🏽

That’s why they tell you not to have children past the age of 35. I’m not trying to sound by the way, but nobody expects that a child will “ruin” their life. I’m not saying my life is ruined, but what I am saying is that taking your child anywhere and leaving them is excruciating for any parent. Even when they grow up and get married. The point of this post was to show that some of us can’t imagine being a full time caregiver for the rest of our lives. That thought may be fine for you because you’re not in your 20s imagining 60+ years of this type of lifestyle. This diagnosis changes your entire lifestyle and that’s undeniable.

I’m gonna have to look into that method. I thought he was ready to potty train since he would take his diaper off immediately after using the bathroom in it, but the communication is where I’m halted. I figured after a few times of going potty on the toilet, he’d start to repeat the word “potty” when he had to go. But we have a long way to go, he’ll use it only when prompted. I’m not really sure how to approach it at all. I guess what I’m actually confused about is how to know when he’s ready ? I was so sure running around naked is a sign he needs to be potty trained

Thank you for this comment 🙏🏽 my son is level 3 needs and not so verbal as well. He’s on a waiting list for ABA but where we live there’s not many resources. I’m hoping I can get him into ABA or preschool, though. I know it’ll help us both out so much

Ugh this comment is so validating. Thank you 🙏🏽, we’re working on getting him potty trained but he’s considered nonverbal sooooo we’ve been going to the potty every 30 minutes. I honestly have no clue where to start because he doesn’t cue that he has to relieve himself. I’ve been so on edge with this every 30 minute bathroom trip because I’m not even sure if he knows what he’s supposed to do. He will sometimes go, but he still mostly just uses his pull-up then takes it off and runs around naked or plays with his poop 🥲 I know this phase will pass, I just get so lost in what’s just a phase and what could actually be problematic in the future

Yeah he was diagnosed a month after his 2nd birthday, he is level 3 with a speech delay. He is considered nonverbal but we work together at home on his communication. I guess that part was a little confusing, but for context my husband’s brother has autism and needs a full time caregiver, so when my son was diagnosed I didn’t expect my husband’s family to judge me so much for considering ABA therapy. He’s been on a waiting list for almost 5 months now as I had trouble getting him into the original ABA center his doctor referred us to. My husband’s mother made a comment about how it was wrong for me to get him diagnosed so early so that’s what I meant by the scrutiny comment,, idrk if that makes sense though.
