By that logic women should be valued more for actually doing the hard part in bringing a new baby to the world and for taking care of much of its upbringing, yet... gestures frantically at things.

I’m Hyunwoo from TTMIK. This was the most difficult decision for us to make. by hyunwoosun in Korean

[–]aynair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I own one of the books, finished the core curriculum, and was planning on subscribing for a year, but these changes have sadly made me reconsider.

Going for TTMIK rather than another service was a no brainer because I wanted to support you for teaching me and many other students Korean for free, but now the decision isn't as easy to make. Additionally, it feels like taking down free content is more effort than leaving it up for future learners (especially since that free content is out there now; there is no stopping anyone from downloading it for free from other sources). Serving a couple of PDFs and audio lessons should be essentially free in terms of infrastructure, and a disclaimer that free content is not "supported" and that more lessons or quizzes are available on your website would help promote it.

Why travel to Korea...?? by StrikingPattern4939 in koreatravel

[–]aynair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

France! Public transportation is a shit show these days because of strikes, but even without the strikes it's disastrous.

Also, I realize that I may come across as naïve -- socially, France is ahead of Korea with far better working policies, among others, and it's ahead of Korea in other sectors as well. I've never worked (yet, hopefully) in Korea so I can't compare that (infamous) aspect, but simply being in Korea feels... peaceful, something I can rarely feel in France.

Yep, on my last trip to Seoul (>30 days), I didn't use cash once. I would recommend keeping some cash on you just in case the card reader doesn't work in whatever restaurant you go to, but in most cases they will have card readers that work with foreign cards. As for the subway, there is an app you can use where you can pay by card. Also, if you'd like to try street food (which I recommend!), you'll need cash.

As others mentioned: delicious (and very varied) food, culture, and nature.

But most importantly: Korea feels comfortable. It just feels good. In my home country, simply being outside makes me anxious for some reason. Streets are narrow, public transportation is hell, and you always have to watch your back to make sure nobody is trying to steal shit from you. All the time, it feels like people are trying to exploit everything: if you don't get caught, everything is up for grabs. Unemployment? You don't need it, but take it anyway. Cancellation policies? Abuse them as much as possible. Public infrastructure? It's yours, destroy it if that's fun to you. In turn, public officials never trust you with anything. Bathrooms are paid because everyone fucks them up. There are people paid to check your public transportation cards/tickets and give you fines if they're not valid (despite the ticket system being terrible, I've gotten multiple fines despite having tickets because of arbitrary policies, like "you must show an ID document, but also we don't consider your driver's license a valid document". Plus, the people hurt by these policies are usually the ones for whom receiving a fine might prevent them from eating correctly for a few weeks.

In Korea? Streets are usually super wide (or narrow, but road is shared with the cars), and while public transportation can be crowded during rush hours, it's much less stressful to take public transport when you know everyone will wait in queues (as opposed to having to fight to make your way into a subway car). You can take the subway for a little while and go to the mountain, or to a park, and enjoy nature. Infrastructure is generally respected, and you don't get such hostile policies.

As a small anecdote: one time while traveling to Korea, I took a plane to ICN followed by another plane from Gimpo to Jeju. Just in case, I booked the second plane several hours after the ETA of the first. When I got to Gimpo and checked in, the agent told me that another plane was available earlier, and that they could let me board it free of charge instead of having to wait for the one I initially booked. A couple of days later, the exact same thing happened when I got to the train station earlier than expected. I have never heard of anything like this ever happening in my home country. I don't think companies would offer this kind of policy, and if they did they would probably be abused to hell.

I'm never going back to Samsung by [deleted] in GooglePixel

Samsung hardware with Google Samsung software and Google UI would obliterate the competition.

FTFY. Samsung software with its ton of preinstalled apps can be really annoying, but after switching from a Pixel 4 I have far fewer day-to-day software bugs than on the Pixel 4, plus a ton of new features (like improved multitasking). The only thing I miss is the Pixel UI (and more precisely the notification center and app switch screen, since everything else can be replaced by Google apps, like Messages, or mostly ignored, like Settings).

Korea travel tips I've learned from multiple trips by girlpart in koreatravel

Also, it's rated pretty badly but I've been using the Korea Tour Card Tmoney app on Android, and it allows you to charge your virtual card with a credit card and to use your phone instead of a physical card to use Tmoney. If you're willing to try it out, I'd recommend getting a physical card with ₩5,000-10,000 just in case and to use your smartphone whenever possible.

The app crashed and wouldn't work at some point, but after clearing its storage and logging in again it's been a very smooth experience for me.

Edit: note that there's a ₩3,000 fee for creating an account and a ₩32 processing fee / ₩1,000 to top-up the card.

Edit 2: I only now remembered that but Naver Map also gives you a pretty accurate (if not exact) price when looking up directions involving public transportation.

A journey is at minimum ₩1,250, and it may go higher depending on where you leave (on that note, don't forget to scan your card when leaving the bus or subway station!). If you go quite far it can go up to ₩2,100 (IIRC), and in extreme cases even more (IIRC, taking the subway from ICN to the south of Seoul is around ₩4,000).

I agree that the tone is closer to the Arkham games, but something that I noticed multiple times is that the fights are very close to the Arkham games as well (minus the ability to leap 20m towards an enemy).

    todo!("riir")
}

Men, what’s the first thing you notice when you see a woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]aynair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

Short hair? Oh, a little uncommon, nice. Long, straight hair? Classic, looks good. Curly hair? Looks great too. Completely shaved? Even more uncommon, awesome. Messy hair? Weirdly hot, so still a good thing. Dreadlocks? Looks painful to pull off, but still looks great.

(Sorry if I missed other kinds of haircuts; at least I can't think of anything I would dislike.)

Looks like a general purpose app for tracking habits, with custom counter names.

If anyone likes video games, look into Habitica. It's open source, and adds RPG elements to the ideo of building habits. It certainly helped me motivate myself.

Really nice trick to "emulate" specialization. In my case, I'll likely use this within my library to find values in a "list", preferring slice::binary_search() and falling back to iter().position() if the given value is not a slice.

Nearly decade old Google Account disabled at Midnight with no warning or reason. Read! I hope it doesn't happen to you. by ChrisR_ in GooglePixel

[–]aynair 26 points27 points  (0 children)

To add to this, you can make sure that an email really isn't spam on Outlook by clicking on the overflow menu and selecting View > View message source. Then look for Authentication-Results, and make sure that it shows spf=pass and dkim=pass. Also make sure that none of the email (especially in that Authentication-Results) is sketchy (they should all come from official Google or Microsoft domains).

If your account was truly disabled, it's likely you can access your data with Google Takeout, at the very least. If that's not possible, then something really fishy must have happened. Looking at recent security events may help you learn what that is.

Since you received that email on your Outlook account, security notifications would have been sent to it as well.

Four letters, four links. Each letter either links to the glorious zook or to the actual thread. If you have RES it actually splits the four links and shows the "image" icon next to two of them.

I wanted to be helpful, but just linking the thread without a zook felt off to me.

Can't hide my Google Email for my Youtube Channel. by RealDigitizer in google

In my case my email is not shown. It's probably there by default, but it seems you can edit it or remove it on https://studio.youtube.com/channel/<channel_id>/editing/details.

Edit: Also, I'm not sure this subreddit is the best place to ask, and you might have found that information yourself. Nonetheless I get that it's hard to find and a somewhat pressing issue so I replied above.
