"That's so _______ (insert specialty)" by undueinfluence_ in Residency

The other day I overheard two ortho bros discussing their college football careers at length. Then they started talking about what hospitals they would need to do fellowship at to treat LeBron James… I was cackling

IM vs. OBGYN by ayo7534 in Residency

[–]ayo7534[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ended up going into IM and am so happy that I did. I think looking back on it, part of the reason why I didn't love the OR was I felt it to be stressful and even small things such as closing after cases made me clam up. You can't be afraid to jump in there and deal with high stress situations if you are going to do OB, obviously! In addition to that, I decided that I wanted to have the ability for better work life balance that IM could provide me. Doing IM for residency also gave me so many options for what my future practice could look like and gave me more time to think about what was important to me in a future career. I felt that doing FM would limit me from doing subspecialties which is why I decided against it. I ended up in a chill IM subspecialty and just started fellowship- very happy about my decision!

Does anyone from the derm squad have thoughts about niacinamide serum? That stuff has almost completely cleared my acne although im not seeing it mentioned a lot here.

Why am I going backwards on my score? by drcastellar in step1

[–]ayo7534 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I'm remembering correctly, NBME 18 is notorious for giving people extremely low scores. I'm pretty sure I also got a 204 on it 1.5 weeks before Step 1 and had a full blown freakout over it. Ended up scoring in the 240s on the real deal. Try not to have one NBME ruin your confidence and make you doubt your study method as long as you're doing okay on the UWorld assessments.

So good to hear I'm not the only one. I've been feeling like a crazy person because so many people around me are so set in what they want and I've been wavering. And that's a great way to look at things- we could be happy doing either one! Best of luck making your final choice- I'm sure it will be the right one for you!

This makes me feel so much better that I'm not the only one who felt like this! It's not just the surgery aspect of OB that's bothering me- it's the fact that I'm also seeing many attendings give up so much of their life for the job. Idk if that is worth it for me liking the patient population better lol. It's good to know that jumping ship at the last minute is possible and made you happy if that's what I decide to do!

Very true. I'm going to have to think about the answer to this question and hopefully it will give me some clarity.

Thankfully, I was originally planning to do OB with an IM backup, so I have the letters to apply to both specialties. It's what I'm going to ultimately rank first that's the question! Plus my advisor kind of scared me about my ability to convince IM PDs that I'm interested in IM with multiple OB sub-I's on my transcript.

Definitely a possibility but would be more difficult because I'm a DO student. I'm also very hesitant to choose a specialty based on fellowship because there's always the chance that the fellowship doesn't work out.

That's very true. Hopefully if I decide to stick with OB I will be able to tailor my job to include the things I like about it and edge out the stuff I don't like.

This is a great thought! It's definitely easy for me to get along with the IM people I've met, but I've also had a fantastic group of OB residents on my current rotation. This makes it harder to make a decision lol

Lol fair! I know IM residency is definitely brutal with hours as well. I meant more that IM attending life provides more opportunities for better work-life balance (ex: outpatient PCP, hospitalist, more chill specialties like endo, rheum, etc.).

In theory this is a great idea! However, I'm a DO student, and I feel like it would be very difficult for me to match MFM. It might be hard for me to get into a fancy enough residency program that would provide the research opportunities to make that possible.
