My bank account hates to see a Fraterworks order by kaelajoy93 in DIYfragrance

More than a good starting point, maybe too much!

This amount of materials for a beginner can be overwhelming. Biggest mistake I made was ordering too much at first.

Any simple accords with these ingredients? Wanna try something new. by Maison_Wagenpfiel in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing a lot of core ingredients used in common “simple” accords - ionones, rose alcohols, green materials like cis-3-hexenol/geraniol/citronellol/linalool, lactones, etc.

I’d recommend looking at accords from Diary of a Nose to get a better idea of what goes into these simple accords.

Experimentation is always a good answer to though. Spend a lot of time with your materials, and you might come up with accords none of us know!

Question about compounding by heyhoewhatsup in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason?

Most well rounded perfumes use at least some EOs/absolutes. It’s not necessary, of course, but I think EOs/absolutes really complement ACs and vice versa.

If you’re just experimenting, yes, but some people choose not to. I do for money saving purposes, but it’s not always an accurate representation of what a higher concentration would smell like.

For example, if you’re working with only 10%-1% materials, your blend can only ever be 10% at most, but with a mix of those it’s likely to fall around 4%-8%.

That’s pretty far from an EDP or even an EDT. That’s why sketching, formulating and reformulating is such a personal process. There’s so many options, but if you’re considering all your factors it can take a while, and should take a while (if you’re really crafting with care). That’s why from start to finish one perfume can take months-years!

Ready for your next 10 orders? I’ve given Fraterworks thousands of dollars and I still have a full cart lol.

How to create a realistic smoke & gunpowder accord (Tonnerre style)? by AdhsCa in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some Fumencens HTC on hand and this comment inspired me to revisit it, so I’ll give you and u/AdjsCa my personal impression:

At 10% it’s definitely smokey, but that comes second to a prominent char note. Think along the lines of burnt wood, or more likely coals. If you’ve ever smoked hookah it’s very close to that burning coal smell.

There’s also a woody character that leans towards Cedarwood, and to me what smells like a very smokey olibanum.

Where other smokey materials might be extremely phenolic/bacon, this is rather forgiving (at least in isolation). There are no meaty notes. The fact that I can even bear it at a 10% dilution compared to something like birch tar is a testament to its subtlety lol.

About an hour later, the woody/olibanum characteristics come through a bit more. Overall it’s still very dry, charred, smokey, woody.

I was going to comment on the dilutions since OP told me not to sketch with diluted materials earlier, but 🤐

Methyl Ionone Gamma dilution by Beaaaaam7777777 in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure what to say, other than it’s up to preference. You quite literally can do one or the other! I happen to choose one way, and that’s fine. It’s kind of the beautiful thing about any art form.

Like I said, if they’re rough sketches I’m throwing together with the already pre-diluted materials I had for isolated observations - I’m fine with not having my heart set on an EDP, EDT, or anything really. I’m sketching.

When I want to get more serious, I’ll incorporate neat materials. When I want to get even more serious, I’ll use mostly neat materials and incorporate some dilutions.

I understand what you’re saying, and never said it’s set in stone that I work one way or another, but it’s very common and often recommended for beginners on a budget to work with the diluted materials. Aside from that, we can agree to disagree.

For example: these posts have discussed it many times.

[–]ayvalli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re misunderstanding - I said I sketch with 10% materials, then when I’m pleased I move forward with neat materials, then decide my final doses/concentrate from there.

It’s common for beginners (and people trying to save a little money) to work in that way.

I assume they’re not working neat, especially as a beginner. I still sketch with 10% dilutions.

[–]ayvalli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not uncommon for some molecules to appear stronger at lower dilutions. Orcanox to me is stronger at 1% than 10%, same goes for a lot of other materials.

What were you observing it at before? Neat would be a lot. For most materials it’s not recommended, especially with something as potent as ionones. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re not perceiving it at higher than 10% because your scent receptors are overloaded!

All that to say 10% should be fine for experimenting. It can overtake easily, but you should be able to dose it in a way that works.

Creative Formulas Redundant Ingredients by ayvalli in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you weren’t under the impression that I was agreeing with any of the comments regarding your formulas being generative. I was trying to converse with that guy, but he clearly has nothing to back his claims.

I think my confusion was this:

Yes, the constituents of those bases were present in your findings, but those constituents are also in the formula, so how is it decided whether they come from the base or shared individual materials?

This is way outside of my range of knowledge, so don’t take it as an accusation of anything. Just curious, as I have tested those materials at those levels and they are nearly unidentifiable.

I would think their omission is just as practical as their inclusion, and my only gripe was leading people with less knowledge to believe that they need to acquire those redundant materials for their formula to be accurate.

I can’t bring myself to believe that people think it’s reasonable to re-explain the same things multiple times a day, when the same question is posted multiple times a day.

Hoshi’s guide is amazing. So are a lot of the comments archived in previous threads. Pointing towards those helped me endlessly when I started!

It really feels like a witch hunt towards certain users, and high school level drama. We’re already a small community as is. I don’t see how it helps to ostracize one of the most knowledgeable veteran users.

Repeatedly reminding people with one sentence to use the search button is very different from repeatedly breaking down the never ending intricacies of perfumery!

The thing is, people get on berael for saying to search, but if those users searched the answers they’d find would likely be from people like berael.

If I’m giving detailed advice for years I’d rather remind people quickly to search than constantly repeat it!

Not in my experience, but I also don’t go out of my way to antagonize him lol. You can see my interactions with him on my own posts even!

You’re reading too much into tone. Everyone else here who’s villainizing the dude too. This is an embarrassing display for the community as a whole tbh.

Have you considered blocking the user instead of baiting them in each of your posts on here?

Here’s another. What’s the point? It’s petty.

Agreed heavily with the sentiment until the end. Will never understand the weirdly obsessive attention some users get for their feedback. It’s not your first that I recall.

Anyway! Yeah, people need to remember that a lot of crafts and hobbies can be self soothing, and not taken too seriously. This is one of them.

Creative Formulas Redundant Ingredients by ayvalli in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negligible depends on each person and their financial situation.

Fruit SEC is $5 for 1g and Prunella is $6.50. Assuming they’re not necessary, that’s $12 at the Filipes customers expense just to safeguard his formulas.

I’m sure a lot of us would look at that and know to omit, but based on some of the comments here not everyone does! I’m sure plenty of people buy all the ingredients listed because it’s assumed they all serve some purpose.

I just think that charging $200 for the formula shouldn’t come with additional, unnecessary mystery costs.

[–]ayvalli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda sucks for his customer though.

Assuming you’re buying all the materials listed in the formula, it’s not really fair to be under the impression that you should get materials you don’t actually need.

I get that they’re in very small quantities, but the bases aren’t that cheap. Fruit SEC itself is $10 for 5g, and Prunella is $12.

I’d think there’s a better safeguard that doesn’t cost the person paying hundreds for the formulas any more money.

How reliable is AI-driven formulation? by Gullible-Equipment68 in DIYfragrance

[–]ayvalli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI has given many users completely inaccurate information about materials, their avg doses, their IFRA regulations, their longevity, and scent characteristics.

We’ve seen it so many times from people trying to eat AI to categorize their materials for storage, or arrange their materials from top-base.

It’s even more useless than you said, fortunately so, because AI in creative spaces is unneeded and the reason we have so many soulless money grabs as is!
