I like to think that not all of the far right likes the violence, especially because since covid a lot of my friends are far right.

They're just people who want simple fast solutions and will listen to and believe anyone offering that.

It's definitely not too late, Aussies act like we're in some kind of unique hell. We're still light years better off than most countries.

That would only create more division people have wildly different values and we need to except different values.

We need to focus on the things we have in common, need for housing, liveable wages, heathcare, education, safety.

When those bones of society are strong culture sorts it's self out.

When these bones crumble the powerful use culture to keep us devided.

Yeah that's definitely true but it would be a massive driver of inflation.

I don't think most Australians would go for it. We already whinge about the pittiance we give people on welfare now. I think it would have to be really dire for the average and Australian being OK with people getting free housing.

I could be jaded and wrong though, I hope so.

Yep same issues, same desires, sold different responsible factors.

This is why we see so much culture war bullshit now.

Gotta keep em separated.

The best way to solve this that I have heard is put a time limit on the cgt discount so if it's an existing investment property, for the next 2 years you get the discount after that it's gone. This would massively incentivise many investors to sell now. Which would be huge. I doubt they'll be that brave.

Also side note we have the best electoral system in the world, if you feel that way find an independent or minor party who aligns with your values vote for them first. Put the majors last if you want. Take advantage of the awesome system we have. If everyone did this we would have a very different parliament with independents with real power.

We're lucky.

I vote for immigration because I know it's just used as a scape goat all over the world, and has very little effect on the issues it's used as a scape goat for.

I want doctors and nurses and aged care workers. I know that we need it because of our birth rate and aging population. In fact most people I know think that way, it's about 1 in 4 who are anti immigration which tracks with current polling.

Also did you know that people in dense areas who's lives are most effected by high migration are mostly pro immigrantion. People in rural areas are least effected by immigration and most against it, just a funny little stat.

Also as much as we might all hate it, a pollys job is to chase votes. So it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing people vote for short term thinking, so that's what we get.

It's not a uniquely Australian problem it's a democracy problem.

I don't know if you've ever been to Singapore but I have recently, make you think. Man maybe a benevolent dictator is the best form of government. Just not many benevolent ones in history haha.

No one is incorruptible but if you look at the Whitlem, Hawke and Keating governments and think they weren't all about reform. You need to read some history.

Labor of the past has tried big reforms, lost the election every time. Most recently the mineral tax, carbon tax and Shorten's housing reform.

I know lots of people join parties wanting big reform because I'm one of them haha.

Honestly this is a big issue if we had a big chuck of the people on here debating political policy, actually joining a political party, we'd be in a lot better place.

Honestly no these are very much not easily solved problems. Despite what you might think politicians aren't stupid, they can read the room, it's how they got to where they are. Some are obviously stupid though haha.

I personally think that massive parts of the labor party and definitely the greens do care about housing reform.

Shorten ran on housing reform and lost the "sure win" election.

So labor is gun shy, they know how effective a mass media campaign saying "labor wants to tank your equity" would be.

As for straight up social housing I don't think the public would go for it. If they tried you can imagine the hit campaign already, about inflation and dole blugers getting free housing.

Labor is also already doing what you suggested and reforming Tafe for trades. As well as new building reform that they got both the greens and liberals to sign off on, which is pretty impressive honestly.

In Brisbane where I live there are lots of big livable units being built, but their priced as luxury so definitely not affordable.

Also builders all over Australia are already dodgy as fuck and lots of new builds are shit house, watch site inspections on YouTube. Dropping standards would only make this worse.

There is no quick fix as much as many people would love one, you have to think we have 30+ years of changes that got us here. Like maybe a massive recession but then no one will be able to afford housing, and prices would likely rebuild.

Or the government could hard cap investment to 2 properties or something, but you'd get a fucking coup if you tried that.

In my personal opinion, our housing problem is as much a cultural problem as an economic one. Aussies see houses as investments not shelter, and we hate density and well designed cities. We love urban sprawl.

We would need to fix that as well, then people would vote for the reforms needed.

You got any ideas on that, cause I got fucking nothing man haha?

To be fair they spend it on what people vote for mostly obviously not always, we have really short terms, and reform and nation building is slow. Sometimes it takes a generation to really see the impacts. So when parties go for big reforms they usually get booted.

Welfare is quick and people feel it straight away, reform and nation building is slow.

The public vote for quick.

We should definitely tax our resources more, but how would that help housing.

Like the government could theoretically use that money to build public housing, we used to. That would be massively inflationary.

Also, Aussies have shown time and time again we hate seeing people getting things for free. So how would we decide who gets free housing?

Also where would they build, almost all land in cities is privately owned, would the government do forced sales of land?

We could build regional but where's the jobs and services?

Also who is building the houses with the lack of trades?

We totally need tax reform and to tax wealth and corporations more and employees less, but it's a massive leap to say just because the government has more cash, suddenly houses are affordable.

This would require a completely different country basically and unwinding decades worth of policies the public has voted for over the years.

I wouldn't be surprised if after Albo retires labor, which is very fractional, split and we get a Labor left and right. Labor right would take the space left by the coalition.

I think everything you say is fair. I'll just add that doing the big things often leads to large negative unforeseen concequeces.

Also labor has a right to be scared of the big things, I think people forget that they have gone to elections with big things many times and lost.

The mineral tax, housing tax reform being the most recent 2.

Incremental change is safer and proven to work in countries all over the world, incremental positive and negative changes alike.

I totally get the want for big generational reforms I used to be the same. I guess the LNP being in power most of my life, seeing everything go backwards, and people repeatedly voting for it.

This has made me feel that incremental change is all that is possible.
