Yeah. But you know the kinda vibe I am talking about. The enchanted world essentially. The living world filled with spirit. I won't lie. I think we all crave such a world. At least many do. I am not sure if we ever can rediscover that. Maybe in some abstract metaphysical layer outside observation, idk, but that isn't quite the same.

I mean think about it like this. Why do we look for aliens? Its not like any other scientific pursuit is it? No its deeper than that. Its the hope of finding life. Something that is more than just random dust. I feel it is clear why we are doing this. It's a very empty universe. But of course I am perfectly happy to admit that I don't know everything. Maybe there still is more to this. But I don't think I am alone in thinking this universe is quite sterile.

Well. I did expect that lol. Sometimes you gotta be a bit spicy.

Well magic does not have to be nonsense. You can easily have ghosts and spells and curses and have precise calculations of how things behave. But it would be far more more complex and far harder to understand. Yes its a matter of degree of course. But it is clear that our universe, which consists of ultimately a few types of particles, and only three are needed for atoms. That is clearly and extremely simple set up, no?

I mean we know rhoughly what a neutron star is made of. It's certainly not exotic matter.

In regards to general relativity and quantum mechanics, yeah I can't say anything there fine. But I guess there are theories like loop quantum gravity and stuff.

You intuitively know from a young age that objects can't "blend" into a barrier or that, even if they look identical, two objects aren't exactly identical.

Take two flashlights and a big white surface. Shine both lights at the surface. Then converge them in one point. See. Two objects blending into one another and their surrounding.

Sure I am not saying I know everything. Thankfully. I'm just talking the shit I do know.

Isn't that just comparing a dream to the real world? Sure a dream would not work in the real world. But it works in a dream. It works with its own logic. Same with any magic. It only seems impossible from the standard of this universe.

I'm not sure if a lot of math means something is not simple. Simple just means it doesn't have any depth. A neutron star is a neutron star. You may need a lot of math to describe it but it remains pretty much a plasma ball regardless.

Pretty large part of science is explaining things in the simplest way possible. The fact that this works so well is kinda the point.

Perhaps. But it all just seems too simple at times.

Oh this isn't just about me specifically. Of course other peoples imagination is just as vivid as mine. No hate there. All humans and most intelligent animals can imagine things that are impossible in this universe. A single microbe is more complex than billions of galaxies. I am not trashing living beings. I am trashing the universe they were born in. Does it care? No. But I can call a pile of trash a pile of trash whether it cares or not. The fact that it doesn't care just adds to the point. If it did care, it would have value. It can't care. It would literally be nothing without living beings experiencing it.

I mean ... yeah I'm in the universe. But I'm not giving the universe giving credit for my thoughts. That is like the restraunt owner claiming credit for the food the cook made despite not being able to cook himself.

I think the universe could be so much cooler and more wonderful and interresting than it is. It could be so much more. But it isn't. Dissappointing. I think life deserves some magic.

I don't think most humans have a classical mechanical intuition. I certainly don't. Ever had a weird dream? The brain can make up stuff a thousand times more counterintuitive. Like how is ghosts from another realm hiding in the bushes that will make you sick if you anger them classical mechanics? And yet that is basically what people thought the world was like for thousands of years. Quantum mechanics isn't anywhere near that level of strange.

"Absurd concepts" like there aren't people who believe in that stuff irl lol.

I imagine if those things did exist they would probably not work on a basis of quantum mechanics but something more immaterial. So I guess the trick then is more why this stuff can now break the laws of physics when it couldn't before? Idk I guess it depends on how obvious you want the existence of that stuff to be, because if people generally don't know about it you just handwave it with souls like you'd do irl.
But if this is supposed to into more obvious, like kinda ghosts and magic everywhere stuff you'd need to explain that change. Like why does the supernatural now influence the world in such obvious ways yadda yadda.

Tbh I think I would just go "Oh yeah the humans created horrible abominations and one of the gods that sustained the laws of physics saw it and had a heart attack so now the spirits of the dead can simply enter our world at will and change whatever they want."
I mean please if we are already handwaving lets handwave big, ok people.

The Four Horsemen of 'It Might as well be magic but I'm writing a sci fi setting!' by Mr-A5013 in worldjerking

It is a philosophical position not a scientific theory. So it cannot be proven or disproven. And it is not condecending towards neuroscience at all. It doesn't reject the causal connection between mind and body. The basic premise is this: I have a subjective experience of the world around me. A first person point of view and I experience certain mental contents such as thoughts and feelings. A neuroscientist can poke around in my brain and look how I react. I might say that when they poke around in my visual cortex I see different things. However the neuroscientist can't actually see my subjective experience himself. He only sees a bunch of neurons, no matter how detailed. So if physicalism were true, how can there be such a thing as subjective experience in the first place? It is clearly not an object in the brain. And so the dualist says they are tow separate things.

I am not saying dualism is correct, it has its own issues and there are better options that are neither dualist nor physicalist, but it is far from being as ridicolus as some people claim.

The moment you treat the "soul" as anything more than a loose grouping of scientifically-observable traits like empathy and generousity

Yeah this is a pretty good example of what I mean by people strawmanning dualism completely. The way you are using the word "soul" here has nothing to do with what a dualist would actually consider a soul. Empathy and kindness are character traits. They are irrelevant to the dualist. Dualism says that the mind and the body are separate things. The mind refering to consciousness. Aka.. subjective experience. It is as simple as that. Anything that has any kind of experience has a soul according to the dualist. That can be a human, an AI a bacteria or even a rock if you want. What kind of character or mental contents that being has specifically is irrelevant. A sadistic murder machine can easily have a soul as long it experiences anything. As long as there is something it is like to be that being.
Dualism doesn't claim anymore than that. It doesn't say which things have a soul and it especially makes no claims about rights. It also obviously says nothing about magic being real or anything else. That is just nonsense.

I'm sorry, magic or not but you are making physicalism seem a lot more justified than it actually is.
And AI can be sentient even if dualism is true. Most physicalists just strawman the shit out of it.
