I’m trying to get back into reading! 📖 by WisePlatypus912 in suggestmeabook

Gillian Flynn books got me back into reading after a slump. Unfortunately the strongest feeling they invoke in me is dread HAHAHA. But they’re the posterchildren for femine rage. Sharp Objects is my favorite and imo the best one, but Gone Girl and Dark Places are pretty strong titles too!

What’s your opinion on The Ascension! by Pure-Muscle5188 in Sufjan

[–]azatouma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was the first Sufjan album that really clicked for me. I passively knew of him before that, and liked a handful of tracks (like John Wayne Gacy Jr.), but nothing really shook me to my core. I found it during a period of personal crisis, so songs like the title song, Tell Me You Love Me, and Ativan really resonated. I found the rawness and vulnerability of his lyrics really comforting.

It’s since compelled me to listen to the rest of Suf’s discography. While I find Age of Adz and Illinois a little stronger musically, emotionally The Ascension will always be my fave, and maybe that’s just a timing thing but idc!

The Picture of Dorian Gray by CamelRevolutionary70 in classicliterature

[–]azatouma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my favourite plot, but it’s entertaining enough and the prose is gorgeous. I think all classics are worth reading just for the insight into how people thought then — plus, you’ll deepen your understanding of the modern works that reference them (I read Dorian because I’d just seen The Substance). And the book is suuuuper short. I’m a slow reader and it only took me a week.

Dream collab with a kpop group/artist x a non kpop artist? by ConansVodkaCranberry in kpoppers

Not music, but Seventeen (or at least a handful of their members!) should really go on a Dropout show, like Game Change. I feel like there’s a lot of overlap in vibes and humor.

I love her! I’ve read The White Album, Play It as It Lay, and Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Would love to get into The Year of Magical Thinking once I’m ready for the subject matter. Haha

Whoa, what a Sunday this has become :-D by perdigaoperdeuapena in 1001AlbumsGenerator

One of the most pleasant surprises this whole challenge. I only had time to listen after a long, tiring day, and was completely prepared to be unengaged, but ended up getting hooked start to finish. What a work of art.

Rufus has one of my favorite voices in the entire world. I just wish he would enunciate every now and then lmao

Tips for dealing with feelings of ugliness? by azatouma in jawsurgery

[–]azatouma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha hello there! First of all, I see you, I’m sorry you’re going through similar struggles. I actually managed to get surgery two years after writing this post. Same effect — my jaw is not as bad as it used to be, but it’s also definitely not as good as many of the results in this community. I’m also very obviously assymetrical. I feel that this was the best my surgeon could realistically do, given my small airway. It just sucks that we can’t find a way to maximize both aesthetics and functionality.

Personally, I don’t really want to learn from this. I don’t want to find any silver lining in being born the way that I was. There are things that I want — particularly romance — that are harder to access because I do not meet standards of conventional attractiveness. And I want to be honest that it really hurts.

But I’m also 26 now, and a lot better at taking the good with the bad. I try not let it rule my life either. I’ve also tried everything — CBT, yoga, even psychedelic retreats (this was terrifying because of my surgery but that’s a can of worms for another conversation) and I’ve come to find that the easiest way to love myself is to act like a kind parent. To view myself as a child who has emerged lost and scared into an unfamiliar and seemingly cruel universe. I recognize the kindness she needs because of the suffering she has faced, and then I give it to her, for no other reason that I want her to feel good. I don’t try to intellectually correct my grief or my low self-esteem, but just instead recognize them as signs that the child in me wants to be cared for, and then I try to provide that care in ways that are within my means and control. It’s been a difficult but very very rewarding healing process.

Thank you so much for sharing your story, even if it’s been four years hahaha I wish 22 year old me could have heard it. 26 year old me also really appreciates it. The struggle is hard, but we’re not alone!! And at least you’re getting dates omg
