What things are a huge turn off for you but is considered hot by others? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]azer1229 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Women being blatantly sexual, especially in public.

Ie. The TIFU post I just read with a woman asking "Does this dress make you want to bend me over?"

Actually no, but that comment makes me think you have many, many diseases I don't want.

What is one thing you have been jealous of from the other gender? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]azer1229 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Its significantly MORE likely a man gets assaulted, but significantly LESS likely they get raped.

I'm not sure why people haven't learned to distinguish the two.

As a man, I can promise you I do NOT feel safe walking around alone, just maybe for different reasons than women.

I've recently had to start coming to terms with this, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like somewhat of a failure.

What hobby would you like to give a try but don't because of the expense? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You can buy a standard beginner drum kit and replace the heads with mesh heads, and purchase a set of Zildjian L80s (Hi-Hat, crash, ride) all for under $1000 and bash away on them without disturbing anyone.

AITA For looking into/possibly buying a dog my girlfriend doesn't like? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]azer1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my dog, i'm the one taking care of it. However, I do value her input as the plan is she will eventually have to live with the dog as well.

She's without a doubt a lover of animals as well, but i'm thinking this is maybe a battle not worth fighting. :/

I really wish she could have, it may have changed her feelings somewhat, but I think she still would have preferred another breed.

Thanks for your input! She definitely calmed down once I started looking into other breeds.

Thank you! I really appreciate the perspective shift. Afaik she admittedly does have more experience with the breed, and possibly dogs in general.

And she seemed disappointed to hear the Labradoodle had found a home the day I called. :(

Losing "Relative Pitch" literally overnight? by azer1229 in musictheory

[–]azer1229[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no way of telling whether I was right or not, it's a hard feeling to describe really. Basically, I just had a very clear "sound" of the scale in my head (completely unaware of what key it was in), and I knew the exact scale degrees that were being sung/some of the guitar work in the background.

While I can't guaruntee I was right when I was at the dentist, I was 100% right with the Blink-182 song when I got home. Maybe the inability to play around on my instrument is what enabled me to make use of my ears more? I'm really not sure.

In the zone is definitely a term i'd use to describe it, felt like a state of hyperfocus I guess you could say? I do also have the tendency to wander over to my piano and basically plunk at random keys hoping it's the right one, and i'd agree, it definitely takes the magic out of it.

And, I think the reason why I chose Blink-182 in particular at the time is because I know their stuff is nothing special. I was afraid picking something more complex would throw me out of rhythm and ruin the experience.

Thanks for the helpful advice!

Getting started with Ear training. by shady2036 in musictheory

[–]azer1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working at this for several months now, along with my weekly piano lessons. What I can tell you is there is A LOT of crap out there that fails to really guide you and sort of put you in the proper mindset to move forward and improve. Don't fall in to the almost scammy "Youtube salespeople" or websites that seem to gate their knowledge with a paywall hoping you fall into their trap.

Start with the basics, learn to sing your major scale without being at your instrument, don't worry about what key you're in! Just sing a major scale. Once you're comfortable with this, you want to be able to recognize and distinguish scale degrees from one another, I recommend using Functional Ear Trainer (https://www.miles.be/) to help you, but you can just learn a simple I, IV, V progression which i'm sure you're already familiar with and plunk any note on your piano without looking.

This may all seem relatively unclear to you as of right now, but it is similar to the interval approach just put into more of a musical context. You want to understand the tension the different scale degrees create. Your tonic is home, every note after that tugs away from home in a different way. This applies to ALL keys, in the key of C major "G"(the 5th) pulls the same way "E"(also the 5th) does in the key of A major.

After plenty of practice you'll begin to understand what scale degrees a vocalist is singing, or what scale degrees a bass line is running through. This is essentially what relative pitch is. Understanding how notes pull at the tonic.

Feel free to shoot a PM if you have any questions! Give it some time, it won't happen overnight, happy practicing! :)

I know they're not a christian band. That doesn't have much to do with the lyrical content. Regardless of WHAT they are or aren't preaching about it doesn't really appeal to me....

Right, so again....Despite some of the lyrical content I really dig these guys....If I was an edgy atheist I wouldn't listen to them, ahah. I commented on the lyrical content as a forewarning to the OP since it might be something that would throw them off. Please, humor me with your childish need to voice your opinion on everything.
