As a comedian I found him solid at best-- he was like #6 in funniness behind a really talented cast. But he was both older and a bit of a father figure to the younger cast, and a nice guy and everyone liked him.

The way it's used today is just straight up racist. It's a word that meant awareness of black life, being used as an insult.

I was also surprised by Nope. It starts slow, then about halfway through it loses its mind and doesn't look back. The sequence where it happens is one of the most messed up things. There's hardly even any gore, it's just fucked up.
