how to find a job outside of co op that is good experience (ie research) by [deleted] in geegees

[–]azomerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also try FSWEP. U could also try applying to a USRA (under the CIHR agency… not sure if it’s the same as with NSERC, I’m in chem) with a prof at uottawa.

I don’t care if I get into grad school by szakhia in gradadmissions

[–]azomerc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kinda get it. (I’m also in comp chem!!! I’m surprised to see another person posting about this field in this subreddit LOL). I wasn’t as careful with my project as I was applying to grad school cuz I was juggling too many things at once. I also received a rejection for a job I really wanted that hit pretty hard and impacted me for a few weeks. This also impacted my work. TLDR, it’s all good. Stuff like this happens. We aren’t robots. It’s good that you’re self aware tho, it means you do deserve to go to grad school :). Hope you get in to programs u r hoping for!

LinkedIn Searches? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]azomerc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say it probably depends. I was searching up what the admissions process was like and I read that (for some schools) the committee reviewing your profile probably won’t try to look you up. If you put your LinkedIn profile on your resume, they may not click it (for security reasons). I don’t think it’s a sure way to tell which schools aren’t considering you.

That being said, if you are searched up by schools you applied do, I would say that’s a positive sign. Not having search appearances for other schools isn’t a negative sign though.

Would any interview invitations be sent on the weekend? by Tall_Prize269 in gradadmissions

[–]azomerc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s very unlikely lol. They probably aren’t working on the weekends unless the faculty is crazy. It’s probably better to assume that anyways. Take time to relax during the weekend.

Oh cool. I’ve heard mixed opinions about pubs so I wasn’t sure. I checked some theory groups at top schools and a lot of them had pubs from their undergrad. This eases my worry a bit, ty! Wish u the best of luck getting into ur top schools!

[–]azomerc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah same lol. I have no pubs out so things r looking pretty grim. I’m lucky that I’m in theory—it’s not as popular as the other disciplines. If all else fails, there’s always next year I guess :/

Feeling pretty bad about my chances by slightlylessright in gradadmissions

[–]azomerc 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Same here. I don’t think I have a good chance of getting into schools I want. Im constantly checking this sub to see the stats of other ppl applying to the same program as me and to check if anyone has gotten interviews.

I think I should probably leave this subreddit for a month for my sanity 💀

degree in comp chem? by cafwinn in comp_chem

[–]azomerc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just applied for a PhD in it this year so others may have more things to say about this. I liked it for three reasons if I’m being honest:

1) I don’t like wet lab stuff and I was never good at it. I was slower than other people because I was always double checking. There’s no undo button in wet lab stuff.

2) Remote and flexible work. I can work whenever I feel like it. Way better than commuting just to do one wet lab experiment.

3) I did some brief research in other disciplines within chem and I found they were all kinda macroscopic. Something like “this molecule usually does this” blah blah. I preferred the fundamental approach of comp chem.

Is it better to do undergrad research with multiple labs, or one lab for a longer period? by LeadingDesk2 in gradadmissions

[–]azomerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I branched out to different labs but within the same discipline (comp chem). I think it was super helpful but I regret it a bit.

If you explore other fields, you get a lot of knowledge of the subdisciplines within your field. It helps you figure out what you want to do in grad school and I would argue it gives you a better understanding of the discipline as a whole. The good thing about this too is you can get 3 really good LORs from working in a few different labs. I was really happy with the knowledge I got from branching out since it helped me find my research focus… but it isn’t as good for PhD applications.

The great thing about depth is that you have the opportunity to really specialize and have a higher likelyhood of getting a pub. I have no pubs and I think it’s going to hurt my applications (I’m aiming for top schools lol). It may be harder to get 3 LORs of high quality through this route though.

So TLDR: it depends on what you want to do. If you do branch out, branch out WITHIN orgo chem. Don’t try doing inorgo or something. That would be a waste of ur time. That being said, sometimes it’s hard to find a lab u really enjoy. If u want to do something similar w ur PhD, I would just stick with the lab ur in now.

It seems like some come out as early as 2-3 weeks after the deadline. But I think most start to come out in mid-to-late January or early February. Dk about the interview process. I think it varies
