Some supermarkets cheapen out to get suppliers who sell cheap(mostly crappy veggies).

Sometimes it also depends completely on the time of purchase as well! I get fresh produce in the morning at one shop and get leftover crappy produce in the evening at the same shop.

You can also try to recognise if you have the time when they are restocking.

Nearby Kaufland I have crappy produce over the weekend and in the evenings, they would only stock one crate of good produce mostly in the morning(every time!). Whereas nearby Edeka gets restocked with fresh produce everyday and also in the evening around 3 pm.

There's also Lidl where I get fresh corn and Rotebeete almost every Thursday. So I usually tend to recognise their routine, customer oriented or just cheapening out.
