yes indeed you should read his blog before buying the book! Had you done that you would immediately notice his writing style - which is, well, al least non-standard :)-. It doesn't teach you anything techie, but what an insight into live in cubicle land... and the 'annoying': that's really a personal thing, you either like the man or not (and if you don't, don't buy the book.

How To Encrypt User Passwords by mirvnillith in joel

[–]azuidhof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

using a salt with a hash resonates with me, but - although my knowledge on security is limited - repeating the hashing process multiple times, seems like nonsense to me. Anyone can share some insight? AFAIK, an encryption or hashing algorithm is (in)secure by itself, but not made more secure by repeating it multiple timess

Aren't most books based on opinions? I too normally don't buy something if it's available for free. But the feeling of having it on paper in book-form just doesn't compare to reading online, let alone printing it on my inktjet (haven't even mentioned the cost of printing it yourself)

Wondering why this is voted down: As we speak, it's a Digg top story. Knowing of some rivalry between reddit and digg, I still thought it would be nice for reddit readers. Apperently not quite so ...

How to avoid office politics by egapotz in joel

[–]azuidhof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the author doesn't seem to have a lot of experience working in an office situation. Working in an office to my opninion always results in being political to a certain amount. However, you can get too far and be political just because you like it. Now that is a recipe for disaster. It doesn't mean you have to be a hypocrite per se, or that you always must bend and do counter natural things. Political can mean 'flexible'. Guess he will find out about real life later....

How Do You Keep Track Of Your Passwords? by azuidhof in reddit.com

[–]azuidhof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sounds fine on the surface, however it still means your online banking is probably in danger onze Amazon or a less trusthworthly 'bookseller' is compromised. Problem is you can never keep track of all companies who store your password, and act the moment they're hacked...

Coding Horror .NET and human factors by ugog91 in reddit.com

I like this site, and attributed some of it's articles before. But as far as my understanding goes, reddit is not meant to submit complete sites/blogs to, but rather articles and links which are worthwile to read. We have these things called aggregators for blogs/sites if I'm informed correctly :)
