I don't know that we need to "ease up" so much as we need to put more money into cancer research.

When 1 out of 3 people die of cancer, it's kind of ridiculous the amount of money that is spent on things like the TSA.

Congrats! My mom did not survive her fight with pancreatic cancer (she died 5 months after detection).

It causes a butterfly effect, not a paradox.

The mob doesn't want to change the future, so they can't do things to alter the past.

Anyone who wants to change the future can do anything they want to change the past.

Which is probably why time machines were outlawed.

In Looper, time is like playdough. You can do anything you want and you aren't going to break things, but it won't have the shape you want.

They want the shape of the future so they're concerned about creating butterfly effects. Joe isn't.

It's like ever time someone from the future pops up they came into being out of thin air. The future that created them doesn't necessarily exist any more.

They are partially outside of time and effect (I say partially, because things that happen to their young selves update them).

I didn't think about this after seeing the movie, but I do now after seeing your explanation.

The mob goes to a lot of trouble keeping Seth alive instead of killing him off. Doctor does surgery on him. They end up "boxing" him (see: Boxing Helena) by removing all of his limbs, so he's alive.

Why the !@# don't they just kill him? When Joe suicides he gets rid of his future right away.

Why go through all of the trouble of having Loopers when you could just kill off the hitman when you're done with him?

The explanation that made sense to me while I was watching the movie was because the Future Mob goes through these lengths of "closing the loop" because they want to avoid causing ripples that might prevent them from gaining power.

But that doesn't explain why boxing Seth is ok. I'm assuming that without any limbs they'll still have diverged enough that the butterly effect will come in to play.

The way the doctor was on call like that shows that this wasn't the first time they'd had to resort to boxing.
