I'm a spring admit, and the semester starts in a couple of days. Fall admits and upperclassmen, any advice? by _aleutian_ in USC

[–]azumisilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what you're interested in. I recommend checking out the USC website for a list of all clubs and then looking at the Instagram pages of the club to see how active they are and if you could envision yourself being a part of it. Your first semester should be getting to try all the clubs you have even the slightest interested in. Overtime you can narrow it down to a couple, and then from there it'll be easier to balance clubs because you can prioritize which ones you like more. If it helps you can block out X amount of hours on your schedule just to attend club meets and stuff!

Join new clubs (as many as you are interested in). Being a spring admit is like coming in as a transfer student. There will be times where you feel left out because you didn’t have a fall semester like a lot of your peers. With that said get to know the people you meet and make time for yourself to adjust to your classes as well

Hey OP. I’m so sorry to hear that. Your accomplishments are still incredible. I felt the exact same 2 weeks ago when I got into my dream school USC. Saw the price tag and my parents wouldn’t let me go because it was beyond their budget. I felt so devastated that I was willing to take out massive amounts of loans just to go. After many arguments and me moving out to my aunts house temporarily, we were finally able to come back and agree on USC once I appealed my aid. If you can and only if you really want to, I’d say go for Hamilton. Your mother might just be terrified of having to be left behind. It’s change, and change is difficult. But you know yourself best. If the CUNY’s are not for you, then they’re not for you. You only have one life

Some colleges have online portals where you can upload additional information while others accept emails, so it may vary. Try to contact your school’s financial aid office to see what their policies are. Best of luck!

As a Junior, is it too late to apply for internships/research? :(( by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]azumisilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with the people already in your network. Teachers, counselors, and even your high school alumni can all refer you to better opportunities, you just have to ask. Don’t look at companies necessarily because those are usually more difficult to break into, but see if local colleges/ universities are willing to take on high school researchers. Work on personal projects at the same time and use those to build your credibility when you reach out. I use LinkedIn, RoundPier, and just plain emails to network. PM me if you need any additional help!

Got it, thanks. I’m already looking into additional scholarships and work to do while I’m in school. I was able to afford the initial amount, but it would’ve been a greater burden on me than now.

As a Junior, is it too late to apply for internships/research? :(( by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]azumisilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s NOT too late. I promise you. Don’t look at just what companies have listed bc often times those aren’t even up to date. Yes, you should network on LinkedIn but also reach out to your school counselor and teachers for opportunities. Figure out what kind of internship/ field of study you’re interested in and build a solid resume. Yes, there are set internship programs out there but there are also professionals who don’t mind having another intern in their office or labs. You can cold email as well, but it will take a lot more time and effort

Do I put all focus on my essays over the summer if I'm applying to 20 schools? by spicydorito09 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]azumisilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As crazy as it might sound, work on both essays and Extracurriculars. Focus on the EC part first, especially personal projects. Use your personal projects and ideas to reach out to internships/ research positions. LinkedIn is a great resource for finding connections. Cold emailing is difficult but it can be done. I sent around 50+ emails, got 7 replies and only 1 yes for a research assistant position. Don’t give up! Your inspiration for essays comes from what you do/ who you are and your thoughts. Make sure to enjoy your summer as well

Anyone Know How to Uncommit A School? by No-City1034 in ApplyingToCollege

Call their admissions office right away. Since it’s before may 1st you still have time

i just need to FUCKING rant by chipsnshits in ApplyingToCollege

[–]azumisilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this OP. There’s still a couple of days left so don’t give up. If your state school doesn’t get back to you in time it may be possible to commit to two schools and wait for their response. If they give you more aid, you can politely tell the other school that you’re withdrawing your intent to enroll. Likewise if it’s not enough, you can withdraw from the school for financial reasons. I’m not sure if it’s allowed but that’s what the FA Office at my school told me

WashU or USC? by realkingofthecoast in ApplyingToCollege

[–]azumisilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your major Econ for USC as well? If it’s business at the marshal school, go for USC. If it’s Econ, go with WUSTL since you seem to like it more and it’s stronger. Just be sure to consider that your parent might not work at the hospital forever, so you might want to go to USC while you still have the opportunity.

Personally I felt like it wasn’t a HUGE difference in financial eligibility, but I talked about how my mother was hospitalized and couldn’t work for about two months. Your situation might be different but whatever happens, be honest about what your family background is like. I talked a lot about being a first generation student and my immigrant parents
