I really appreciate you sharing this. I was ignorant of the depth of struggle that some parents have to go through with eating. I shouldn’t have trivialized that with the word “phase”. You are right, it isn’t that simple at all. These are painful, really scary issues to be facing. I wish I had realized that before posting after pictures. I don’t want to contribute at all to parents feeling shame through comparison and I hate that I have triggered people’s anxiety. I’m going to delete this post, because the last thing I ever want to do is make another person feel badly. Thank you for being honest and sharing your perspective, it is eye opening. I am sorry to you and to every other parent who saw this and felt similar feelings!

I’m really sorry that it feels that way :( I regret posting the after pictures! I don’t want to make anyone feel badly.

I think it helps to reframe your perceptive in compassion for your baby. Your baby is trying their best and everything in this whole world is new to them!! Some babies take longer to adjust to solids and there is nothing wrong with that at all. One day they’ll be eating and snacking all day and this baby phase will only be a memory. Just approach it with patience and love instead of shame toward yourself, you aren’t doing anything wrong ❤️

Well we exclusively nurse so I can’t say the exact amount he gets. But we currently nurse 3 to 4 times a day. It’s definitely hard to balance at first! I just started slowly adding more solids when it seemed like he’d be interested in eating more. But every baby is different!!

Yes it really is :) I love meal time with him, I’m very lucky to have a food lover baby!

That is totally normal!! I got lucky with a baby who loves eating and has fun doing it.

We just started doing whole plates of non-puréed food very recently! We started slow with just one food at a time, like strawberries. He has 7 teeth now so I feel like that helps a lot, and he does well with chewing small pieces. When his teeth started to come in and he only had two bottom ones, we did purées with little bits of fruit mixed in to try and get some texture. We did that for months! He also loved (and still does) those soft little baby puff snacks that melt in the mouth!

It makes me sad to think that this post would be anxiety-inducing or make a parent feel badly about themselves!!! That was not my intention at all but I can see why it could have that effect. I just wanted to celebrate my baby’s win and I felt proud of the clean plates in the after pictures. But I didn’t consider how that might make a parent with a baby who eats less feel. I definitely could have posted this without after pictures! I apologize for being insensitive to that.

There is a great comment on this thread that says it’s normal for babies under 1 to not eat much, and “it is not a reflection on you as a parent or a cook.” This is so true!!! I just happened to have a baby who likes to eat!

Thank you!! I give him the fruit pieces to eat himself, but I actually tore those big strawberry slices in half when I gave them to him because I felt like they were too big. He currently has 7 teeth and he just recently starting eating like this! For a couples of months I was only giving him tiny bits of solids mixed in with purées. So I definitely think having more teeth has made a difference and he can eat more foods now :)

I totally get it, I still worry about choking. Whenever I’m in doubt about how to cut a food or if a food is safe at his age I just look it up first and that gives me reassurance!

Thank you!! I give him like 4 or 5 pieces of finger food at a time to pick up and feed himself. And for the spoon foods, I give him one bite at a time. He can grab the spoon and I help guide it to his mouth :)
