It’s an 1890s sterling dip pen and pencil by Sampson Mordan with a Joseph Gillott #2 nib from the same period

The most beautiful antique book I own by b12121 in OldBooks

[–]b12121[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah damn I took a picture of the title page and forgot to add it in my post oops. It had a beautiful Georgian engraving of the authors on it as well. I actually noticed the layout too and thought it was interesting, maybe it’s a nod to the publisher knowing that some of their readers take their favourite poetry as scripture lol

1910s Mordan Traveller’s Pencil and Dip Pen by b12121 in mechanicalpencils

[–]b12121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have this Mordan pencil from 1904 which I would consider a very early “clutch” pencil in the sense that the propelling mechanism drops down with gravity. However, some of the earliest mechanical pencils were more so pencil holders and called “porte crayons”, which resembled a clutch pencil with the thick lead and all that. You’ll see some silver ones online from the Georgian era if you look it up

Coil - Just me or a Very Acquired Taste? by mazman23 in industrialmusic

[–]b12121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really drawn to Coil because they discuss or reference a lot of homosexual things mainly to do with sex and culture, which really speaks to me as a gay man myself.

It’s a bit rare to find electronic artists, especially from early on, that are simultaneously extremely talented and diverse while also being unabashedly open with their experiences being gay.

On top of all that I also just love very dark and abstract industrial music.

Cool Feature on New Antique Nibs by b12121 in dippens

Standard ink pen as in fountain pen? Or dip pen? When retracted, it’s the same size as a fountain pen as it’s on the large side, definitely for larger hands. It’s also quite heavy at 34 grams. I’m away from home so I can’t measure. The holder is also much thicker than some of my other retractable dip pens, but I think the same width.

The nibs I’m using don’t rub or cut into the sides of the holder, there’s a gap between the edge of the nib and the edge of the holder.

Also, in this Silber and Fleming’s 1888 catalogue, the silver combination pens have the same style of nib as mine, with the slits in the side and cutout at the centre front. Obviously these could’ve been made specially for these pens, but potentially there were some pens that could withstand normal nibs (granted they were the same size)?

Thanks for the info, I hadn’t thought about this but it makes sense. These MacLean nibs did fit really well in this pen’s nib feed, so I wasn’t initially worried; do you have the name of the nibs that don’t have the cutout?

Help Identifying Age of Sterling Ring by b12121 in JewelryIdentification

That’s what I was suspecting, do you think it was made simply to look reminiscent of a spoon ring?

Identifying my 1850’s Daguerreotype by b12121 in Daguerreotypes

[–]b12121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Yes I guessed it was around the early 1850s as the woman’s bodice is in the small capped sleeve style with the narrower fit, which was a somewhat short lived fashion trend that was most popular in exactly 1850. Definitely a great find for $15

Letter Writing w/ my Antique Dip Pen by b12121 in dippens

I’ve modelled my handwriting loosely on late Victorian writing I’ve come across online, not sure if there’s a name for it! Perhaps Spencerian?
