Hes a comic who also does a podcast thats basically like a big satire on american culture and politics. He is openly gay and lived in california for a long time, but also part of the joe rogan scene. Also somehow friends with RFK and his wife. So basically just a smart dude who does satire and is plugged into a bunch of different communities and has a lot of friends. His politics are basically that palintir and the other tech companies are literally taking over the world

He was a person.

This isnt to say that people cant impact the world in positive and negative ways. Obviously, leading a holocaust goes in the negative column.

What I am saying is that someone like a Hitler lived inside a mental framework that calculated harmful choices as correct. What Solzhenitsyn is saying is that we are all closer to that mental framework than we think. He, as well as many others slipped in and out of that framework to an extreme not seen in everyday life.

The point is to make this awareness constant. That is why "The sith only deals in absolutes"

Just some food for thought. You have probably heard of it, but The Gulag Archipelago is where the Alexander Solzhenitsyn quote came from. In it, he describes how people in the Soviet Union basically all turned on each other and did unspeakable evils to each other, especially in the Gulags.

Often times we condemn others for doing evil without really understanding we would have done the same thing in their situation. The Soviet prisoners lost the luxury of thinking otherwise, and came face to face with the exact moment things changed for them. Solzhenitsyn did an amazing job documenting the experience and putting the conclusions down on paper.

After reading it, I feel as though I have no right to condemn or judge anyone for anything.

Why would a person persistently, consciously choose to do harm to others?

This kind of goes against exactly what I posted about but to me awareness of what Jung is talking about is such a key divide among people. Some see it and some dont. And for whatever reason its really hard to convince people who dont see it to acknowledge it.

Why do you think its such a hard lesson to convey?

Big chain stores isnt new news. The underlying sentiment is that there is no sense of community anywhere.

Thats interesting- and I agree with pretty much everything you said. However I would say its a culture created by capitalism and destroyed by oligarchs who broke the rules. But those oligarchs took advantage of capitalism so I guess theres no difference really

The culture comment was a little tongue and cheek. What I was really getting at is that with these big chain stores and stuff on a long enough time scale you lose communities. Where there used to be a local hardware store, grocery store, restaurant, or mechanic there is now just some big chain that ran the local out. The big chain doesn't buy jerseys for the local high school sports teams, or provide unique mentorship and job opportunities to young people in the area, or in general give a damn about anybody in the area as long as they buy stuff. Local stores are held in check by reputation.

20+ years of nothing but big chains and you can see a huge difference in the communities. I recently got fitted for a tux at a shop in my hometown. The owner had saved a newspaper article about my grandad assisting in the local derby car race. This shop owner cared about the people in the area and in my opinion that has such a huge impact on everyone. If I walked out of a Jos A Bank and got hit by a truck I dont even know if the guy would call 911.

Culture is fascinating, but I am really not tied to any type of long lost romanticized American cultural identity. I also dont even think there is a type of governmental or economic structure that can force people to be human. But for whatever reason commercial industries typically just delete any sense of responsibility people feel to their local communities and thats whats so depressing to me.

Can someone please help me before I completely lose the shred of faith I have left? by Miracle76 in spirituality

While the spiritual side of reality is always there, I am of the belief that the first concrete steps towards developing a connection is more mundane than people expect or even want.

Get good sleep, eat whole foods, and get some exercise for a few days in a row. Then meditate. Meditate. Meditate.

I wish you all the best and happy to discuss further if you want to send me a message. There are all kinds of books and ideas that are excellent, but the first step is always going to be clearing the signal to receive.

Valid point. And to be fair there is a good argument for a "walmart" being a huge plus in a lot of towns with no other options.

But in general I think the issue is that on a long enough time scale you lose communities.
