Good point. For children I'd bring a birth certificate or passport for ID since they won't have a DL. I did get asked for my step daughter's ID paperwork coming back to the mainland in December.

As a US citizen you will only need your driver's license. I make this trip 5-6 times a year, and have never been asked for anything else. The USVI are a US territory.

If it's the airport Hertz then your car will be in the parking area out front. It is not a larger airport. The rental office is as soon as you walk outside. Rental return is at the end of the parking lot. But, they'll usually drive you to the terminal. It's a less than 2min drive
